Chapter 15 - The Sunrise at Lake Norman

One year after the live-stream that shattered the Vance dynasty, Lake Norman was bathed in the warm, golden light of early summer.
The lawn behind our farmhouse was decorated with white fairy lights, fresh wildflowers, and long banquet tables filled with laughter, music, and celebration.
We were hosting a double celebration: the first anniversary of our true marriage, and the official grand opening of the Elias & Elena Community Youth Center in Charlotte.
My mother, Elena, was laughing near the barbecue pit with Arthur Sterling, who had become a close family friend and mentor. Friends, colleagues, and members of the reformed Vance family council mingled freely in the warm afternoon breeze.
Marcus walked up behind me on the wooden pier extending out into the calm, sparkling lake. He wrapped his arms securely around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder.
“What are you thinking about?” Marcus murmured, kissing my temple.
I smiled, resting my hands over his. “I was thinking about the night I woke up at two in the morning in that cold, terrifying house. I remember thinking my life was completely over.”
Marcus turned me gently in his arms, his hazel eyes glowing with boundless love, peace, and adoration.
“You saved my life that night, Nia,” Marcus said softly. “You taught me that the truth doesn't destroy us—it sets us free. You gave me a reason to fight, a reason to live, and the greatest gift I have ever known: a real home.”
“And you gave me a real partner,” I replied, looking into the eyes of the man who had fought through his darkest demons to stand by my side.
Marcus reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
Inside rested a stunning, custom-designed ring made of platinum and an untreated, brilliant ocean-blue sapphire, surrounded by a delicate band of diamonds.
“Three years ago, you were given a family ring that represented a contract and a cover,” Marcus said, taking my left hand and sliding off the old Vance heirloom ring, tossing it into the deep, clear waters of Lake Norman.
He slipped the vibrant blue sapphire onto my finger. It sparkled brilliantly in the afternoon sun.
“This ring is for the woman who brought light into my darkness,” Marcus whispered, his voice trembling with pure devotion. “Nia Vance, will you marry me again? For real this time. For love. For life. Forever.”
Tears of pure joy spilled down my cheeks as I threw my arms around his neck.
“Yes,” I cried softly against his lips. “A thousand times, yes.”
As Marcus lifted me into his arms, kissing me under the wide, open Carolina sky, the crowd on the lawn erupted into cheers and applause.

The cold whispers in the dark were gone forever. In their place remained only the warmth of a love forged in truth, an unshakeable bond of trust, and a bright, beautiful future stretching out as far and limitless as the rising sun.
