Chapter 12 - Rebuilding the Ashes

The aftermath of Vivian’s arrest was swift and historic.
Within forty-eight hours, federal authorities seized Vivian’s offshore accounts in Panama and Belize, recovering over $38,000,000 of the stolen trust funds. The United States Attorney announced that due to the overwhelming forensic evidence provided by our team, Vivian Vance would face a mandatory minimum sentence of twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole.
The board of Vance Global Holdings convened an emergency session that Friday.
By a unanimous vote, Marcus Vance was officially reinstated as Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
However, Marcus’s first official executive order shocked the entire corporate world.
He restructured Vance Global Holdings into a public benefit corporation, creating a $20,000,000 permanent endowment fund dedicated to supporting victims of vehicular trauma and traumatic brain injuries—with the very first lifetime grant of $5,000,000 allocated directly to Leo Davis and his specialized care facility in Asheville.
A week after the trial hearings concluded, Marcus and I returned to the Vance estate for the last time.
The massive mansion felt different now. Without Vivian’s oppressive presence, it was no longer a gilded prison; it was just an empty, cavernous house filled with dusty antiques.
We walked through the sunroom, where rain was gently tapping against the glass.
“What do you want to do with this place?” Marcus asked, wrapping his arm around my waist as we looked out over the sprawling gardens.
“Sell it,” I replied without hesitation. “Every single brick. Sell it and donate the proceeds to community housing projects across Charlotte. We don't need a monument to ghosts, Marcus. We need a home.”
Marcus smiled—a genuine, radiant smile that reached all the way to his warm hazel eyes.
“A home,” Marcus repeated softly, turning me in his arms, his hands resting gently against my waist. “Just you, me, and a fresh start.”
“Are you ready for that?” I asked, looking up into his face.

Marcus leaned down, his forehead resting gently against mine. “Nia, for three years, I thought I was living in a nightmare I could never escape. You didn't just clear my name; you gave me my life back. I want to spend every single day proving to you that I can be the husband you always deserved.”
For the first time in our lives, Marcus kissed me—not with hesitation or guilt, but with a deep, passionate intensity that erased every cold night we had ever endured.
