Chapter 9 - The Paranoia Begins: Haunting the Man Who Tried to Drown Me

Gasps of confusion and alarm rippled through the hundreds of guests in the ballroom.
“What happened to the power?” Julian’s voice echoed nervously over the dead PA system. “Security! Get the backup generators online!”
Before the staff could react, the massive projector screen behind the stage flickered violently back to life, glowing with an eerie, deep-blue underwater light.
The sound of rushing water—heavy, suffocating, and terrifying—roared through the surround-sound audio speakers at deafening volume.
“Julian! The door won't open!”
My own voice, captured by the vehicle’s interior dashcam cloud feed, screamed through the ballroom.
“Unlock it! Julian! Mason is still in the back!”
Julian froze on stage, the pen slipping from his trembling fingers and clattering against the marble floor. His eyes widened into dinner plates as he stared at the giant screen.
The video footage from the sinking SUV began to play in crystal-clear high definition.
The entire high-society assembly watched in horrified silence as Julian methodically unbuckled his seatbelt, ignored my screaming pleas, rolled down his window, and swam away, leaving his wife and paralyzed brother to drown in the flooding cabin.
“Oh my God...” a woman in the front row shrieked, covering her mouth in sheer horror.
“Is that... did he abandon them?!” a senator gasped, backing away from the stage.
The video cut abruptly to external drone footage—footage Mason had captured from the sky on the day of the crash. The screen displayed Julian pulling himself onto the riverbank, walking directly into the arms of a pregnant Chloe, kissing her on the lips, and smiling as our car disappeared beneath the waves.
“Turn it off!” Julian screamed, his voice cracking into a manic, hysterical howl. “Turn it off right now! It’s fake! It’s a deepfake!”
Chloe let out a blood-curdling scream, stumbling backward off the stage platform and crashing into a decorative floral display.
The screen flickered again. This time, it displayed high-resolution scans of laboratory toxicology reports, side-by-side with high-definition video captures of Julian dropping white powder into my nightly glasses of milk.
In massive, glowing red letters above the video, the caption read:
PREMEDITATED ATTEMPTED MURDER: THALLIUM POISONING ADMINISTERED BY JULIAN MILLER.
“No... no, no, no!” Julian shrieked, clutching his head, his sanity shattering before the eyes of the entire state elite. “She’s dead! Valerie is dead! She drowned in the bay! I saw her die!”
Suddenly, the overhead spotlights snapped back on, blindingly bright, focusing entirely on the grand marble staircase at the back of the ballroom.
The crowd gasped and parted like the Red Sea.
Standing at the top of the stairs, dressed in a sweeping, midnight-blue silk gown, was me. My platinum wig was gone, my contact lenses removed, my natural brown hair falling over my shoulders in elegant waves.

And standing right beside me, tall, imposing, and standing firmly on his own two feet, was Mason.
“You’re wrong, Julian,” my voice resonated through the silent, frozen hall without a microphone. “The dead have returned to collect their debts.”
