Chapter 8 - Infiltrating the Estate Under the Eyes of the Traitors

The evening of the gala arrived. The Sterling Manor, perched high on the ocean bluffs overlooking the Atlantic, was illuminated by hundreds of golden spotlights. Luxury limousines stretched down the winding private driveway, discharging politicians, corporate moguls, and high-society socialites dressed in black-tie attire.

Inside the grand ballroom, classical music played softly from a live string quartet.

Julian stood near the marble staircase, holding court with several state senators. He looked the epitome of old-money elegance, wearing a velvet dinner jacket, his expression carrying just the right amount of melancholic grief. Chloe stood beside him, clutching his arm, smiling weakly whenever guests offered their condolences.

Neither of them noticed the catering van parked near the service entrance.

Disguised in the black uniforms of high-end event staff, Mason and I moved seamlessly through the estate’s service corridors. Mason had disabled the internal security cameras on the second floor, replacing the live feeds with a looping pre-recorded cycle.

While Mason slipped into Julian’s private study to access the hardwired wall safe containing the original, un-tampered family documents, I moved through the shadows of the mezzanine overlooking the ballroom.

From above, I watched Julian step up to the podium on the raised stage. He tapped his microphone, and the room fell into a respectful silence.

“Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests,” Julian began, his voice breaking with theatrical emotion. “Thank you for coming tonight. We are gathered here to honor the memory of two extraordinary souls: my beloved wife Valerie, and her brother Mason.”

On the massive digital projector screen behind the stage, a giant black-and-white photograph of me and Mason appeared.

“Valerie dedicated her life to this community,” Julian continued, wiping away an invisible tear. “And in her honor, tonight I am officially inaugurating the Valerie Sterling Trust. Through this foundation, we will ensure that her vision for our maritime industry lives on—by transferring operational control to an international consortium that will guarantee thousands of new jobs.”

Down on the floor, Walter Vance stood ready with a leather portfolio, preparing to present the official foundation charter for the ceremonial signing.

At that exact moment, my encrypted earpiece chimed.

“Val, I have the safe open,” Mason’s voice came through crisply. “I have Victor Sterling’s original confession letters, the offshore wire routing slips, and the secondary poisoning log Julian kept in his desk drawer. I’ve uploaded everything to the Department of Justice’s federal server. The raid team is five minutes out.”

“Copy that,” I whispered into my collar microphone. “Initiating stage two.”

I walked over to the lighting and audiovisual control booth located at the back of the mezzanine. With one swift movement, Mason’s operative inside the booth knocked out the house technician and plugged a customized flash drive directly into the master projector console.

Down below, Julian raised his pen to sign the fraudulent document in front of dozens of flashing cameras.

“For you, Valerie,” Julian proclaimed loudly, pressing the pen to paper.
