Chapter 7 - Forensic Audits and Hidden Mistresses or Secret Debts

Back in Minneapolis, the following Monday morning brought an army of financial professionals into my office.

Rebecca Sloan sat across from me, accompanied by David Chen, a leading forensic accountant specializing in corporate embezzlement and marital fraud. On the large display monitor on the wall, David pulled up a complex web of financial flowcharts.

“Laura, over the weekend we completed the initial forensic scrape of Eric’s secondary devices and subpoenaed bank records,” David began, adjusting his glasses. “What we found goes beyond family vanity. Eric was running an intricate shell game at the dealership.”

“Explain,” I said, leaning forward.

“Eric was taking customer trade-in allowances on luxury vehicles, underreporting the vehicle values on the dealership ledger, and pocketing the cash difference by directing buyers to write secondary checks to a third-party consulting LLC,” David explained. “The LLC was registered under his sister Megan’s name.”

I stared at the screen in disbelief. “Megan knew about this?”

“Megan was receiving a monthly 'consulting fee' of $3,500 from that LLC, which she used to pay for her luxury apartment lease and designer wardrobe,” Rebecca interjected. “She wasn't just a spoiled sister; she was an active co-conspirator in an illegal tax evasion and corporate kickback scheme.”

“And there’s more,” David added, clicking to the next slide. “Eric took out a $60,000 second lien on his BMW M5 through a predatory private lender four months ago. He used that cash to pay off a massive online sports betting debt he accumulated during the spring playoffs. To secure the loan, he forged your name as a secondary guarantor, listing this very house as collateral.”

A cold fury ignited in my chest. If I had not frozen the accounts when I did, Eric's reckless gambling and illegal dealership kickbacks could have dragged my children and me into financial ruin. He had weaponized my credit, my reputation, and our family home to prop up his house of cards.

“Can the lender enforce the lien against the house?” I asked Rebecca.

“Not a chance,” Rebecca replied with absolute confidence. “Because the property is held in your pre-marital family trust—which Eric never successfully broke into—and because we have indisputable forensic proof that your signature was forged by Eric's dealership associate, the lien is legally void against the estate. In fact, the private lender is currently preparing criminal fraud charges against Eric and the notary.”

“What about the dealership?”

“I had a confidential conversation with the dealership’s corporate legal counsel this morning,” Rebecca said, a faint smile touching her lips. “They are launching an internal audit of every single vehicle Eric has sold in the last three years. They have placed him on immediate unpaid administrative suspension, revoked his demo vehicle privileges, and disabled his access to their corporate software.”

I leaned back in my leather executive chair, looking out over the Minneapolis skyline. Outside, the first gentle snowflakes of the season were drifting down through the gray sky.

“He thought he was leaving me in the cold,” I murmured.

“Instead,” Rebecca said, closing the folder, “he’s trapped in eighty-degree heat with no money, no job, a forged-loan investigation, and two furious dependents who are realizing the gravy train has permanently derailed.”

“Let's finish it,” I said. “File the criminal complaints with the county prosecutor today.”
