Chapter 4 - Screams Across the Marble Lobby

Patricia stepped forward, her face contorting with aristocratic outrage. “Do you have any idea who you are speaking to? My son is a top luxury executive in Minneapolis! We are booked in your Presidential Suite! How dare you humiliate us in front of other guests over a silly banking glitch!”

Several wealthy guests turning in room keys at adjacent counters paused, staring at Patricia’s theatrical outburst.

“Ma’am, please lower your voice,” Marcus said, stepping back slightly.

“I will not lower my voice!” Patricia shrieked, slamming her designer handbag onto the counter. “Fetch your general manager immediately! We demand our keys, a complimentary bottle of vintage champagne for this insult, and a formal apology!”

Right on cue, two burly resort security officers in tailored navy blazers approached the desk, flanking the resort’s director of guest operations, a tall, imposing woman named Victoria Vance.

“Is there a problem here, Marcus?” Victoria asked, casting a cool, discerning eye over Eric, Patricia, and Megan.

“Mrs. Vance, this guest attempted to check into the Presidential Suite using a reported stolen corporate card bearing someone else's name,” Marcus reported crisply. “His secondary card was declined for non-sufficient funds. The guests are refusing to step aside.”

Victoria looked at Eric. “Sir, is your name Laura Dawson?”

“No! I am her husband, Eric Dawson! Laura authorized this trip!” Eric stammered, sweat now visibly beading along his hairline, soaking into the collar of his linen shirt. “This is just a misunderstanding. Laura is at our family cabin in northern Minnesota. She probably forgot to clear the travel notification with the corporate office!”

“If that is the case, Mr. Dawson, you may call your wife right now and have her execute an official third-party authorization form via our encrypted legal portal, accompanied by her government ID and corporate authorization letter,” Victoria said evenly. “Until that payment is verified and cleared, you must vacate the check-in area. Our bellhops will hold your luggage outside.”

“Vacate?” Megan gasped, her voice shrill. “We have dinner reservations at the seaside grill in one hour! Look at my luggage! You can't just leave our bags on the sidewalk like we’re homeless people!”

“If you do not step away from the desk immediately, ma'am, we will have local law enforcement escort you off the property and issue a formal trespass warning,” Victoria replied without a flicker of hesitation.

Patricia looked as though she had been slapped across the face. “Eric! Do something! Pay them! Fix this right now!”

“Mom, calm down! Let me call Laura!” Eric snapped, his hands shaking violently as he pulled out his iPhone.

He dialed my number. The phone rang twice before clicking over.

“Laura! Pick up the damn phone!” Eric hissed into the speaker.

“Hello, Eric,” my voice came through the line, cool, clear, and utterly unbothered. “How is Key West?”

“What the hell did you do to your corporate card?!” Eric yelled, abandoning all pretense of manners as he paced across the lobby floor under the watchful eyes of the security guards. “We’re standing at the front desk of the Grand Azure Palms and the manager is claiming the card is stolen! They’re refusing to check us in! Call your bank right now and authorize the charges!”

I took a slow sip of my coffee before replying. “I didn't do anything to my corporate card, Eric. The fraud department did. When an unauthorized party steals a corporate instrument from a private desk, takes it across state lines, and attempts an eighteen-thousand-dollar luxury charge, that is called grand larceny.”

Eric stopped dead in his tracks. His breath hitched in his throat. “Laura... what are you talking about? You knew we were going on this trip!”

“You announced you were going on a trip with your mother and sister while ordering me to haul firewood at a cabin,” I said, my voice dropping to a razor-sharp whisper. “You did not tell me you stole my card. I will not authorize a single cent. In fact, if you attempt to swipe that card anywhere in Florida again, the local police will be dispatched to arrest you on site.”

“Laura, you listen to me!” Eric whispered furiously, his voice cracking. “Mom is crying! Megan is hysterical! We are stranded in the lobby with seven bags! You transfer twenty thousand dollars into my personal checking account right now!”

“Your personal account has an emergency legal freeze on it, Eric. Along with all our joint funds.”

“What?!”

May you like

“Check your email,” I said calmly. “You have been served with divorce papers, an emergency restraining order for financial dissipation, and an eviction notice from the house. Have a wonderful vacation, Eric.”

The line went dead.
