Chapter 13 - The Divorce Settlement That Left Him with Nothing

Seventy-two hours later, the final emergency hearing of the State Chancery Court convened in Room 402.
The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity with financial journalists, corporate analysts, and curious onlookers.
Judge Robert Vance, a stern, veteran jurist with thirty years on the bench, sat beneath the state seal, reviewing the massive four-hundred-page forensic settlement dossier compiled by our legal team.
At the plaintiff’s table, I sat beside Victoria Sterling and Arthur Sterling, dressed in an immaculate cream-colored tailored suit, projecting absolute poise, dignity, and unassailable authority.
At the defense table sat Shiaoza, flanked by two armed corrections officers and a court-appointed public defender. He looked broken, his shoulders hunched, his eyes fixed permanently on the polished oak table, unable to raise his head to meet the gaze of the courtroom sketches.
Judge Vance adjusted his reading glasses, cleared his throat, and slammed his wooden gavel down with a sharp, definitive BANG!
“In the matter of Vane v. Shiao, Court File Number 2024-CV-8891,” Judge Vance’s deep baritone echoed across the silent courtroom. “Having reviewed the unconditional marital dissolution deed, the verified forensic audits of Deloitte, and the unanimous corporate governance resolutions of Vane-Shiao Global Holdings, the Court finds the defendant, Shiaoza Shiao, guilty of gross, systemic breach of fiduciary duty, marital fraud, and grand larceny.”
Judge Vance looked over his glasses directly at Shiaoza.
“The marital dissolution is hereby granted with immediate effect. Pursuant to the ironclad terms of the 2014 Zurich Irrevocable Trust Agreement, the plaintiff, Elena Vane, is awarded one hundred percent of all joint marital equity, corporate shares, intellectual property patents, and real estate holdings.”
The judge slammed his gavel down a second time.
“Furthermore, the defendant is ordered to pay thirty-eight million dollars in civil restitution to Vane-Shiao Global Holdings, and is permanently barred from holding any executive, director, or fiduciary position in any publicly traded or privately held corporate entity within this state.”
A wave of frantic scribbling swept through the press gallery.
Shiaoza didn't even flinch. He sat completely motionless, a hollow, defeated shell who had finally realized that his ten-year illusion of grandeur had been completely wiped from the face of the earth.
I stood up, buttoned my tailored suit jacket, and bowed respectfully toward the bench.
“Thank you, Your Honor.”
As I turned to walk down the center aisle of the courtroom, the reporters surged forward with cameras flashing, shouting questions:
“Chairwoman Vane! What is your first priority for the restructured conglomerate?”
“Chairwoman Vane! Will the company rebrand to remove the Shiao name?”

I paused at the double mahogany doors, looked directly into the primary television camera, and offered a calm, radiant smile.
“Tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM, our global brand will officially relaunch as Vane Global Holdings,” I announced clearly to the entire world. “And our first executive order will be the total modernization of our domestic operations, the expansion of our frontline employee benefits, and the permanent removal of every toxic policy that ever disgraced our halls.”
