Chapter 13 - The Charity Gala Ambush: Live Broadcast of a Double Murder Plot

Julian looked from the shotgun barrel to the forty-foot drop behind him.
The sound of heavy tactical boots echoed across the container deck as Mason and Agent Cole approached from the gangway.
Mason stepped into the floodlight, walking tall, powerful, and unyielding, his assault rifle lowered at his side.
Julian stared at Mason’s legs in utter, paralyzed disbelief. His brain completely fractured under the impossibility of what he was witnessing.
“Mason... you... you can walk?” Julian gasped, clutching his head. “You were paralyzed for fifteen years! I pushed you into the river in a wheelchair!”
“I spent fifteen years waiting for the man who killed my parents to show his face,” Mason said, his voice ringing with cold, absolute authority. “You and your father are nothing more than common thieves who thought you could steal what our family built with sweat and blood.”
Julian looked at the two of us standing side by side.
Desperation, madness, and cornered malice twisted his handsome face into a grotesque snarl.
“You think you've won?!” Julian shrieked, lunging toward his fallen briefcase. “I am Julian Vance! I control this shipyard! The media thinks you're dead! The public loves me! I will buy the best legal defense team in the country, and I’ll walk out of court a free man!”
“The public doesn't love you anymore, Julian,” I said calmly, tapping the satellite transmitter pinned to my tactical vest.
“What did you do?” Julian whispered, his face draining of all color.
“While you were running across this deck,” I explained, “Mason linked our live audio and video feeds—including Chloe’s full confession, your conversation with Morales, and the security footage of you poisoning my milk—directly to the master broadcast servers of every major news network in the state of Virginia.”
At that exact moment, five miles away in downtown Virginia Beach, the annual Maritime Heritage Charity Gala was taking place on the giant screens of the convention center.
Over one thousand of Virginia’s most prominent politicians, judges, business leaders, and socialites were watching the live feed of Julian Vance cornered on the deck of a smuggling ship, screaming about how he had drowned his wife and sabatoged his brother-in-law’s wheelchair.
Julian fell to his knees on the steel deck, staring at the small camera blinking red on my chest.
His carefully cultivated reputation, his aristocratic charm, his stolen millions, and his social standing—everything he had lived for, lied for, and murdered for—had been incinerated on national television in real-time.
“It’s over, Julian,” I said quietly.
Julian looked down at his trembling hands, tears of pure humiliation and defeat streaming down his face.
He lunged forward with a wild, pathetic scream, trying to grab my ankles to drag me over the railing with him.
Mason moved like lightning. He stepped forward, caught Julian by the throat with one hand, lifted him off the deck, and slammed him face-first onto the steel floor.
With a swift, practiced motion, Mason wrenched Julian’s arms behind his back and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Agent Cole walked up, placing a firm hand on Julian’s shoulder.

“Julian Vance,” Agent Cole declared in a booming voice. “You are under arrest for attempted capital murder, federal maritime piracy, conspiracy to smuggle restricted military avionics, trafficking in controlled substances, and the historic first-degree murder of Richard and Eleanor Sterling. You have the right to remain silent.”
Julian lay pinned against the cold steel of the ship, weeping into the rust, as the floodlights blazed down upon his ruin.
