Chapter 10 - Poisoned Paranoia: When the Traitors Turn on Each Other in the Dark

The thirty-six hours leading up to Thursday midnight were marked by mounting paranoia and chaos inside the Vance-Sterling faction.

Thanks to the listening devices Mason had planted across the estate, Julian’s penthouse, and the shipyard executive offices, we listened to every frantic, terrified breath they took.

Julian had completely turned on Chloe.

After discovering that her pregnancy was an elaborate lie designed to secure her position as his co-conspirator, Julian locked her inside the guest bedroom of our family mansion, confiscating her phone, passport, and car keys.

“You don't leave this room until the money hits the Swiss account tomorrow night,” Julian’s voice snarled through the bedroom listening bug. “The moment Morales’s shipment clears, you and I are done. You will sign over your remaining four percent voting shares to me, and you will take the first flight to Costa Rica. If you ever show your face in Virginia again, you’ll end up in the Blackwood River right next to Valerie.”

Chloe’s broken sobs echoed through the empty mansion. “Julian, please! I gave you the access codes to Valerie’s safe! I helped you tie the wire around her seatbelt! You can't just discard me!”

“You're a liability, Chloe,” Julian snapped coldly before the heavy door slammed shut and the deadbolt turned.

Meanwhile, Mason and I were finalizing our tactical operations inside the secret vault of the Old Sovereign.

The team we had assembled was not a private mercenary squad; it was an elite joint task force comprising the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), and the Virginia State Police Special Operations Division.

At 8:00 PM on Thursday evening, Special Agent Marcus Cole, the regional director of NCIS, walked into the ghost bunker beneath the pump station.

He looked at Mason standing tall on both feet, and then at me, dressed in full tactical black gear.

“Fifteen years ago, your father gave me a sealed envelope, Valerie,” Agent Cole said solemnly, placing a worn leather badge on the table. “He told me that if anything happened to him, his children would eventually bring the Vance syndicate to justice. When your car went into the river five days ago, I thought we had lost our last chance.”

“The Vance family thought they could bury the Sterlings,” Mason said, racking the slide of his tactical rifle. “Tonight, they find out the Sterlings own the ground they stand on.”

Agent Cole spread out the architectural blueprints of Dock Four across the main monitor.

“Here is the operational breakdown,” Cole explained. “The Sirena Star is currently steaming past the Chesapeake Bay light tower. It will dock at Berth Four at exactly 23:45. Our satellite reconnaissance confirms that the vessel carries seventy-two sealed shipping containers. Sixty of them are legitimate commercial freight. Twelve containers in the lower hold contain sixteen tons of stolen military-grade titanium alloy, restricted radar guidance systems, and forty million dollars in synthetic fentanyl precursors bound for Victor Morales’s distribution network.”

“And Morales himself?” I asked.

“Morales arrived at Norfolk International Airport by private jet two hours ago,” Cole confirmed. “He is currently in transit to Dock Four in a convoy of three armored Suburbans. Julian Vance has already deployed twenty armed private contractors from IronClad Logistics to secure the perimeter and deactivate all port authority cameras.”

“Julian thinks he’s walking away with thirty million from Morales and fifty million from Vanguard Maritime,” I said, checking the radio link in my tactical vest. “He has no idea that every square inch of Dock Four is surrounded by federal agents.”

“There’s one complication,” Cole noted, looking at me seriously. “Julian has armed guards stationed throughout the primary crane control tower. If they realize they are trapped, they have enough firepower to stage a bloody hostage siege with the civilian dockworkers on the night shift.”

“They won't get the chance,” Mason said, his voice flat and lethal. “Valerie and I know the internal maintenance crawlspaces of the Dock Four crane towers better than anyone alive. Our father built them. We will disable their heavy weapons platform from the inside before the federal convoy breaches the perimeter gates.”

I looked at my brother. Fifteen years of feigned paralysis, fifteen years of silent preparation, and three days of executing our counter-strike had all led to this single, defining midnight.

“Let’s go take back our family’s home,” I said.
