Chapter 8 - Marcus's Desperate Smear Campaign

Backed into a corner and facing the complete annihilation of their social standing, Marcus and Evelyn launched a desperate, scorched-earth public relations campaign.
On Wednesday morning, local media outlets, society blogs, and social media platforms were flooded with sensationalist headlines:
"TRAGEDY AT STERLING MANOR: HIGH-SOCIETY HEIR ACCUSES PREGNANT WIFE OF VIOLENT PSYCHOTIC BREAK"
Marcus appeared on a prime-time local news segment, sitting in a softly lit studio wearing a somber black suit, dabbing at his eyes with a handkerchief while his high-priced PR consultant stood just off-camera.
"My wife, Clara, has been struggling with profound mental illness since the passing of her father," Marcus sobbed convincingly on camera. "The stress of the pregnancy pushed her over the edge. She attacked me, she attacked my mother, and in her manic state, she caused those terrible injuries to herself. My mother and I have been crucified in the media simply because we tried to protect her from her own inner demons. All we want is for Clara to receive the psychiatric help she so desperately needs, and for our baby to be safe."
Within hours, internet trolls and paid bot accounts began swarming my social media profiles, leaving vicious comments:
'She’s just after the Sterling family fortune!'
'Gold digger trying to destroy a good man!'
'Look at her husband crying on TV, she's clearly crazy!'
I sat in Raymond’s downtown law office, watching the news broadcast on his wall-mounted television. My hands were shaking with fury, my fingernails digging into my palms.
"He is trying to taint the jury pool," Raymond said calmly, turning off the screen with the remote control. "Robert Vance-Smith knows they cannot win on the physical evidence, so they are trying to create enough public doubt to force the District Attorney into offering a watered-down misdemeanor plea deal."
"He sat on my back and laughed while his mother whipped me," I said, my voice thick with tears of rage. "And now he’s on television crying like a victim?"
"Let him talk, Clara," Raymond said, leaning across his desk with a dangerous, calculating smile. "Because every lie he tells on public television is another perjury charge waiting to drop. And tomorrow morning, we are going to drop the anvil."
At 10:00 AM the following day, Raymond held a massive press conference on the steps of the County Courthouse. Over fifty journalists, television camera crews, and national reporters were packed onto the plaza.
Raymond stepped up to the podium, flanked by high-resolution display boards covered in black cloth.
"For the past forty-eight hours, Marcus Sterling and his mother Evelyn have engaged in a cowardly, fraudulent media campaign to paint my client, Clara Sterling, as mentally unstable," Raymond announced, his booming voice echoing off the marble pillars. "They claim Marcus is a grieving, protective husband. They claim Clara inflicted her injuries upon herself."
Raymond gestured to his legal aides, who dramatically pulled off the black cloths.
Gasps of horror rippled through the gathered journalists. Cameras began clicking frantically.
On the boards were the official, unredacted crime scene photographs taken at St. Jude's Trauma Center: the deep, cross-hatched lacerations across my back, the swollen, bleeding chemical burns from the cayenne pepper, and the severe friction abrasions on my pregnant belly.
Next to the photos was a transcript of the decoded dashcam audio, featuring Evelyn’s words: "Rub the pepper in... sign the conservatorship papers, Clara."
"These injuries were not self-inflicted," Raymond declared, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "They were calculated acts of torture carried out by Marcus Sterling and Evelyn Sterling to extort an eight-million-dollar inheritance from an expectant mother. And today, we have filed a fifty-million-dollar civil lawsuit for torture, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and civil rights violations against both individuals and their corporate entities."
The press conference exploded into chaos, reporters shouting questions over one another.
By noon, the public narrative had completely reversed. The social media campaign Marcus had paid thousands of dollars to orchestrate collapsed instantly. The outrage was deafening. Protesters gathered outside the Sterling Horizon headquarters holding signs that read: "JUSTICE FOR CLARA" and "LOCK UP THE STERLINGS."

Marcus’s corporate partners immediately began pulling their funding. Three major commercial banks froze Sterling Horizon's credit lines, and the city council canceled a multimillion-dollar downtown development contract with his firm.
Marcus thought he could win the battle in the court of public opinion. Instead, he had handed us the rope to hang him with.
