Chapter 14 - The Hammer of Justice Falls

After only two hours of deliberation—the fastest verdict in the county's history for a major felony trial—the jury returned to the courtroom.

The atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.

"Has the jury reached a verdict?" Judge Holloway asked, her voice echoing in the dead silence.

"We have, Your Honor," the jury foreperson, a stern-faced woman in her fifties, replied, handing a manila envelope to the court bailiff.

Judge Holloway reviewed the verdict forms, her expression unreadable, before handing them to the court clerk.

"Defendants will rise and face the jury," the clerk commanded.

Marcus struggled to stand, his knees shaking so violently he had to lean on his attorney’s arm. Evelyn stood stiffly, her face completely drained of life.

"On the first count of Attempted First-Degree Murder of Clara Sterling," the clerk read aloud, "we find the defendant, Marcus Sterling... GUILTY."

Marcus let out a ragged, choking sob, collapsing forward against the mahogany table.

"On the second count of Aggravated Torture... GUILTY."

"On the third count of False Imprisonment... GUILTY."

"On the fourth count of Coercion and Extortion... GUILTY."

"On the fifth count of Witness Tampering... GUILTY."

The clerk turned to the second verdict form.

"As to the defendant, Evelyn Sterling:

On the count of Attempted First-Degree Murder as a Principal Accomplice... GUILTY."

"On the count of Aggravated Torture... GUILTY."

"On the count of Extortion and Witness Tampering... GUILTY."

A wave of quiet, profound relief swept over the courtroom. Raymond placed a warm, protective hand over mine. I closed my eyes, a single tear of deep, cathartic release rolling down my cheek.

Judge Holloway removed her reading glasses, looking down from the bench with cold, unyielding judgment.

"Marcus Sterling. Evelyn Sterling. In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely witnessed such depraved, calculated cruelty. You weaponized your wealth, your social standing, and the sacred bond of marriage to torture a pregnant woman for mere monetary greed. You showed no mercy to Clara Sterling, and you showed no mercy to your own unborn child."

Judge Holloway picked up her sentencing gavel.

"Marcus Sterling, on the count of Attempted Murder and Aggravated Torture, I sentence you to life in state prison, with no possibility of parole for forty-five years. You will serve this sentence at Red Rock Maximum Security Penitentiary."

Marcus let out a pathetic wail, slumping to the floor as the bailiffs clicked the heavy steel transport cuffs around his wrists and ankles.

"Evelyn Sterling," Judge Holloway continued, "for your role as the instigator and perpetrator of these heinous acts, I sentence you to thirty years in state prison. Given your age, you will likely spend the remainder of your natural life behind bars."

Evelyn swayed, her eyes rolling back as she fainted dead away onto the courtroom carpet.

BAM.

The heavy wooden gavel slammed down with finality.

"Court is adjourned."

The nightmare was finally, irrevocably over.
