Chapter 9 - The Golden Boy Cracks: Logan’s Last Reckless Gamble

By Wednesday morning, the walls were closing in on Logan Whitmore at terrifying speed.
With Whitmore Industries officially placed into corporate receivership and forensic auditors dissecting every ledger line, Logan realized his Cayman Island accounts were about to be frozen by federal warrant.
Desperate, delusional, and rapidly running out of time, Logan decided to make one final, dangerous move.
It was eight o'clock in the evening. Alexander had been called down to Hayes Tower’s trading floor to oversee the acquisition of Whitmore Industries’ distressed manufacturing plants—assets that Alexander intended to place entirely into an independent trust under my name.
I remained in the Tribeca penthouse, reviewing architectural plans for a new educational foundation I was creating to fund scholarships for underprivileged young women.
Suddenly, the penthouse lights flickered and died, plunging the vast living room into darkness.
Before I could reach for my phone, the heavy service elevator doors in the kitchen hallway pried open with a loud metallic screech.
A figure stepped into the dim light of the living room, illuminated only by the distant amber glow of the city skyline.
It was Logan.
He looked completely unhinged. His clothes were filthy, his hair matted with sweat, and in his right hand, he clutched a heavy steel tire iron. He had bribed a building maintenance worker to give him access through the freight elevator shafts.
"Emma," Logan rasped, his voice wild and erratic. "You really thought you could destroy my life and just walk away in your pretty emerald dress?"
I didn't scream. I didn't panic.
I slowly stood up from the sofa, keeping the heavy mahogany coffee table between us. I discreetly reached into my cardigan pocket and pressed the silent emergency panic button Alexander had insisted I carry at all times.
"Put the weapon down, Logan," I said calmly. "The building security knows the power was cut. You have less than two minutes before the tactical team breaches this floor."
"I don't care anymore!" Logan screamed, smashing the tire iron against a crystal side table, shattering it into a thousand glittering shards. "Dad had a massive heart attack this morning! He’s in the ICU at Mount Sinai! Mom is locked in an apartment because the bank seized the Westchester house today! And you... you’re sitting up here in a fifty-million-dollar penthouse living like a princess!"
"You did this to them, Logan," I said, refusing to let my voice waver. "You stole 3.2 million dollars. You destroyed Dad’s company. You gambled away our family’s future, and you let me take the blame for six years."
"Because you were nobody!" Logan screamed, lunging forward, his face twisted in psychotic rage. "You were just the quiet little sister who did what she was told! You were supposed to stay in the kitchen! You were supposed to keep your mouth shut!"
He raised the steel bar, preparing to swing it toward me.
CRASH.
The heavy reinforced glass of the penthouse terrace doors exploded inward in a shower of safety glass.
Two heavily armed private security operatives in tactical gear dropped from the roof ropes, their laser sights painting bright red dots across Logan’s chest within half a second.
"DROP THE WEAPON! ON THE GROUND NOW!"
Before Logan could even register what was happening, the main double doors of the penthouse burst open.
Alexander rushed into the room, his eyes blazing with murderous fury. Behind him were four uniformed NYPD officers with their weapons drawn.
Logan dropped the tire iron, the heavy metal clattering loudly against the marble floor. He raised his hands, trembling uncontrollably, wetting himself in sheer terror as the tactical team tackled him hard to the floor, pinning his face against the cold stone.
Alexander crossed the room in three strides, pulling me tightly against his chest, his powerful arms wrapping around me like iron bands.
"Emma! Are you hurt? Did he touch you?" Alexander asked, his voice shaking with genuine terror—a rare emotion from a man who feared nothing on earth.
"I’m okay, Alexander. I’m completely fine," I whispered, burying my face in the crook of his neck, breathing in his familiar, grounding scent of cedarwood and rain.
Alexander turned his head slowly toward Logan, who was being cuffed by the police officers.
Alexander’s voice was dead, cold, and final.
"Officer in charge," Alexander said smoothly. "Charge him with attempted murder, aggravated burglary, felony assault with a deadly weapon, and terroristic threats. Arthur Pendelton will be at the precinct in twenty minutes with the Cayman wire-fraud dossiers. Ensure he is denied bail under high-flight-risk protocols."
"No! Emma! Please! Tell him not to send me to Rikers!" Logan wailed as the officers dragged him toward the elevator. "I’m your brother! You can't do this to your brother!"
May you like
I looked at him one last time as the elevator doors began to close.
"My brother died six years ago," I said softly. "You’re just a criminal facing justice."
