Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Ambush: Richard Whitmore on His Knees

When we arrived at the marble-clad lobby of the Tribeca tower, Logan was already pinned against the reinforced glass reception desk by two towering private security guards.
His expensive designer jacket was torn at the shoulder, his hair was disheveled, and his eyes were bloodshot with wild, frantic rage.
"Let me go! Do you know who I am?!" Logan screamed, spitting on the floor as he struggled against the guards' iron grips. "I’m Logan Whitmore! My sister is up there! Emma! Emma, get down here right now!"
The moment the elevator doors parted and Alexander stepped out with me by his side, Logan froze.
Alexander didn't run. He walked with the slow, terrifying grace of an executioner stepping onto a scaffold. The two security guards immediately stepped back, maintaining a perimeter but allowing Alexander to stand directly in front of my brother.
"You have ten seconds to explain why you are trespassing on private property, Logan," Alexander said, his voice flat, low, and devoid of any human warmth.
Logan swallowed hard, looking between Alexander and me. He tried to muster his usual arrogant sneer, but his voice cracked with desperation.
"Emma! You have to stop this!" Logan yelled, taking a frantic step toward me before the guards blocked him. "Dad is having chest pains! Mom is locked in her room crying! The banks just sent an automated notice freezing our corporate credit cards! If Hayes Global doesn't sign that acquisition agreement tomorrow morning, we are completely ruined!"
"And what does that have to do with Emma?" Alexander asked coldly.
"She’s our sister!" Logan shouted, as if that word held any sacred meaning after years of abuse. "She owes us! She lived under our roof! Emma, tell him to sign the papers! Tell him to give us the fifty million! You owe me! I protected you for years!"
I walked forward, stepping out from behind Alexander’s broad frame until I was standing less than three feet from my brother.
I looked at his manicured hands—hands that had never scrubbed a single grease pan, hands that had never worked forty hours a week behind a cash register, hands that had stolen millions from our family while letting me take the blame.
"You protected me, Logan?" I said, my voice shockingly clear and steady in the vast marble lobby. "You stole fifty thousand dollars when I was eighteen and let Mom steal my entire college fund so you could keep driving your sports car. You spent the last six years treating me like dirt while you gambled away millions in offshore accounts."
Logan’s eyes widened in horror. "H-How do you know about that?"
"I know everything, Logan," I said, leaning in slightly. "I know about the 3.2 million in Cayman shell companies. I know about your forged signatures. And so does the District Attorney."
Logan collapsed onto his knees right there on the polished lobby floor, clutching his head in both hands. "No... no, no, no. Emma, please. If the feds get involved, I’ll go to prison for twenty years! You can't do this to me! We're blood!"
"Blood didn't stop you from letting me eat scraps near the trash can on Thanksgiving," I whispered fiercely.
Alexander stepped forward, placing a firm, protective hand on my shoulder. He looked down at Logan with absolute disgust.
"Security," Alexander commanded without looking away. "Escort this criminal off the premises. If he steps within five hundred feet of this building or Miss Whitmore again, have him arrested for felony stalking and hand over the Cayman financial dossiers directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
"No! Emma! Alexander! Please!" Logan wailed as the two security officers dragged him backward across the marble floor, his designer shoes squeaking uselessly against the stone until the heavy glass doors slammed shut behind him.
I stood in the silent lobby, my chest heaving with adrenaline.
For the first time in six years, I didn't feel small. I didn't feel broken.
Alexander looked down at me, a proud, tender smile touching his lips. "You did brilliantly, my love."
May you like
"This is only the beginning, isn't it?" I asked, looking up into his gray eyes.
"Tomorrow morning at ten o'clock, your father is coming to Hayes Tower to make one final plea," Alexander replied smoothly. "And tomorrow, Emma... you won't be in the kitchen. You will be sitting at the head of the boardroom table."
