Chapter 12 - The Crushing Weight of Stolen Honor

Deputy Miller moved with blinding speed, intercepting Beatrice before she could reach the console, grabbing her right wrist with an iron grip.
"Get your hands off me!" Beatrice shrieked, swinging her left arm wildly. "I am a homeowner! I am an executive! Arthur, you tell this pig to release me right now!"
"Ms. Beatrice Evans," Captain Briggs said, stepping onto the deck and pulling a pair of stainless steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for Aggravated Child Abuse with Great Bodily Injury, Felony Unlawful Restraint of a Minor, Grand Larceny over One Hundred Thousand Dollars, and Filing a False Official Felony Report."
"No! No! David! Karen! Help me!" Beatrice screamed, thrashing against Deputy Miller’s grip.
David walked slowly toward the base of the deck. His face was a mask of utter heartbreak and profound shame.
"David, tell them!" Beatrice cried out, tears of genuine panic finally streaming down her face. "Tell them Arthur is crazy! Tell them to stop!"
David looked up at his older sister. For years, he had taken her side, believed her gossip, and treated me like an unstable liability.
"You cut that little girl's head until she bled, Beatrice," David said, his voice cracking with deep sorrow. "You pinned our brother's motherless child to a chair and laughed at her... while you lived in a house bought with the blood he spilled in Afghanistan. You are not my sister. I don't even know what you are."
David turned around, grabbed Aunt Karen by the arm, and led her toward the gate. Neither of them looked back.
Agent Brenda Holloway stepped forward, holding a manila folder. "Ms. Evans, Child Protective Services has also initiated an emergency custody intervention for your minor daughters, Chloe and Madison, due to their active participation in and exposure to felony child abuse on these premises. They will be placed in temporary protective custody under the supervision of the state pending full psychological evaluation."
When Chloe heard those words, she dropped to her knees on the grass, sobbing hysterically. "Mom! Mom, please! You said nothing would happen! You said Uncle Arthur wouldn't do anything!"
"Chloe!" Beatrice wailed, struggling violently as Deputy Miller forced her arms behind her back. "Arthur, please! Think of the girls! You can't let them take my daughters! You're their uncle!"

I stood three feet away from her, looking down at the woman who had tried to destroy my child’s soul just to feed her own grotesque ego.
"I thought of the girls for three years, Beatrice," I said, my voice echoing across the now-empty backyard. "I gave you a palace. I gave you my pension. I gave you second, third, and fourth chances. And you repaid me by terrorizing my seven-year-old daughter. You made your choice. Now you will face the consequences."
