Chapter 10 - The Unmasking of the Neighborhood Queen

"This is an outrage!" Aunt Karen screamed, jumping up from the VIP table and storming toward the deck. "Captain, whatever Arthur told you is a complete lie! Beatrice is a pillar of this community! She just saved his daughter's life two days ago! How dare you humiliate our family like this in front of these respected guests!"

My brother David also hurried over, his face flushed with anger. "Arthur, what the hell are you doing? Call off your dogs! You’re ruining Beatrice’s promotion! Have you completely lost your mind?"

Sarah Jenkins didn't even flinch. She pulled a certified court document bearing a gold foil seal from her binder and held it directly in front of David and Karen’s faces.

"This is an Emergency Order of Possession and Immediate Eviction issued this morning by the Honorable Judge Alvarez of the County Superior Court," Sarah announced in a voice that carried to every corner of the backyard. "It certifies that Arthur Evans is the sole legal owner of this parcel. It further establishes that Beatrice Evans has paid a total of only three months of rent in thirty-six months, while Arthur Evans has paid over ninety-four thousand dollars out of his military disability pension to prevent foreclosure."

The crowd of church members and neighbors gasped.

Mrs. Kensington’s hand flew to her mouth. "Wait... Beatrice told us she bought this house cash after her divorce!"

"She lied," Jonathan Reynolds spoke up, stepping forward and displaying his credentials. "My name is Jonathan Reynolds, Chief Risk Officer for First Horizon Financial. Ms. Beatrice Evans is currently the subject of an active federal bank fraud investigation. Eighteen months ago, Ms. Evans forged Arthur Evans’s signature and used an expired military credential to fraudulently obtain a sixty-thousand-dollar home equity loan against this property, diverting the proceeds into her personal shell company."

The corporate vice president, Mr. Harrison, took a sharp step back from Beatrice, his expression transforming into one of utter disgust. "Beatrice... is this true? Did you embezzle funds through a shell company using your brother’s military identity?"

"No! It's a clerical error! It's a setup!" Beatrice screamed, her voice losing all its cultivated elegance, turning into a raw, feral screech. She pointed a trembling, manicured finger at me. "Arthur did this! He's jealous of my success! He's trying to destroy me because he's a broken, useless cripple who couldn't even protect his own wife!"

The backyard went deathly, completely still.

The sheer, venomous malice dripping from Beatrice’s words hung in the warm summer air like poison. The neighbors, the executives, the church members—people who had spent months listening to her preach about family values and christian charity—stared at her in stunned horror.

I took three slow, deliberate steps up the wooden stairs until I was standing directly in front of her.

"You took my combat compensation, Beatrice," I said, my voice low, steady, and terrifyingly calm. "You stole my money. You lived in my house. You slandered my name to everyone who would listen. And I stayed quiet because I thought of my nieces."

May you like

I leaned in closer, looking directly into her wide, panicked eyes.

"But then you touched my daughter."
