Chapter 7 - The Knock at the Door

The heavy knock at the front door sounded like the tolling of a funeral bell.

Ethan sat paralyzed, his chest heaving, his eyes darting frantically between the manila folder on the table and the front foyer. Margaret was hyperventilating, clutching her silk shawl around her neck as if it could shield her from the impending catastrophe.

"Rachel... please, don't open that door," Ethan begged, tears of absolute humiliation welling in his eyes. He dropped to his knees on the hardwood floor, crawling toward me, attempting to grab the hem of my trousers. "Please! We can work this out! We don't need lawyers! I’ll sign over the Lakeview apartment to you! I’ll break off everything with Chloe tonight! I swear I’ll change!"

I stepped back, disgusted by the sight of a grown man groveling on the floor he had refused to clean.

"Get off my floor, Ethan," I said, my voice cutting through the room like a razor. "You didn't want a wife. You wanted a sponsor, a maid, and a victim. You chose this path when you gave me that ultimatum."

I walked over to the door and pulled it open.

Standing in the well-lit hallway was a uniformed Cook County Sheriff’s Deputy alongside a sharply dressed process server carrying two thick, red-stamped legal packets. Standing right behind them was Evelyn Vance, wearing an immaculate black suit and holding a leather briefcase.

"Good evening, Rachel," Evelyn said with a professional smile. "Is the defendant available?"

"He's right there on the floor, Evelyn," I replied, stepping aside.

The process server stepped into the apartment. He looked down at Ethan, who was still kneeling by the dining table with grease on his chin and tears on his cheeks.

"Ethan Cross?" the server asked.

Ethan didn't answer; he just stared up in numb horror.

"You are formally served with a Petition for Dissolution of Marriage, an Emergency Injunction against Dissipation of Marital Assets, and an Order to Appear in Courtroom 402 of the Cook County Domestic Relations Division," the server stated, dropping a two-inch-thick legal binder directly onto Ethan’s lap.

The server then turned to Margaret, who was cowering behind the dining room chair.

"Margaret Cross?"

"Get away from me!" Margaret shrieked. "I’m a sick, elderly woman! You have no right to harass me in my son's house!"

"This is not your son's house, ma'am," the Sheriff’s Deputy interjected sternly. "This property is the sole, non-marital asset of Rachel Bennett. You are being served with a 24-Hour Notice of Ejectment for unlawful detainer and trespass, along with a Third-Party Summons for Civil Fraud."

The server placed the second packet squarely on top of Margaret’s half-eaten steak.

Evelyn walked into the center of the room, unbuttoning her blazer and surveying the scene with clinical detachment.

"Ethan, as counsel for your wife, I am formally advising you that pursuant to Judge Harrison’s emergency order, you have exactly sixty minutes to pack your personal clothing into a single suitcase and vacate these premises," Evelyn announced. "All electronic keys, garage openers, and corporate credit cards must be placed on the kitchen island immediately."

"Sixty minutes?!" Ethan screamed, jumping to his feet, his desperation turning into manic fury. "This is my home! I live here! You can't throw me out onto the street at eight o'clock at night!"

"You surrendered your right to this residence when you utilized domestic premises to facilitate financial crimes," Evelyn replied smoothly, pulling a certified court order from her briefcase. "If you are not off the property by 9:15 PM, Deputy Miller here will place you under arrest for criminal trespass and contempt of court. And believe me, Ethan, Cook County Jail does not offer the luxury amenities you're accustomed to."

Ethan looked at the armed deputy, whose hand was resting firmly near his utility belt. The reality of his situation finally crushed whatever delusions of grandeur remained.

"Where... where am I supposed to go?" Ethan whimpered, looking like a lost child. "My accounts are frozen! I don't have cash for a hotel!"

"You have your mother's luxury apartment in Lakeview," I said sweetly. "Oh, wait... that’s right. The locks on Unit 2B were changed two hours ago by the court-appointed receiver. Neither of you can enter without a sheriff's escort until the forensic audit is complete."

Margaret let out a strangled wail, burying her face in her hands. "My beautiful home! My furniture! Everything I worked for!"

"You didn't work for any of it, Margaret," I said, looking down at her with cold disdain. "You stole it from my marriage. Now take your purse, grab your coats, and get out of my sight."
