Chapter 12 - The Collapse in Courtroom 402

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Evelyn Harrison," the bailiff bellowed.
Judge Harrison was a formidable woman in her late fifties, with sharp silver hair, piercing hazel eyes, and a reputation throughout Cook County for having zero tolerance for domestic financial abuse. She took her seat on the bench, adjusted her half-rim glasses, and opened the thick blue docket file in front of her.
"We are here in the matter of Cross v. Cross, Case Number 2024-D-004812," Judge Harrison stated, her voice commanding complete silence in the courtroom. "Petitioner Rachel Bennett is present with counsel, Evelyn Vance. Respondent Ethan Cross is present with court-appointed counsel, Marcus Rivera."
Judge Harrison looked down from the bench, her gaze landing squarely on Ethan. Ethan visibly shrank into his chair.
"Mr. Rivera," Judge Harrison began, her tone icy. "I have reviewed the emergency filings, the forensic accounting ledgers, and the certified financial disclosures submitted by petitioner's counsel. I must tell you, in my twenty-two years on the family court bench, I have rarely seen such an egregious, systematic, and bad-faith attempt to defraud the marital estate."
Marcus Rivera stood up, clearing his throat nervously. "Your Honor... my client acknowledges that certain financial decisions made during the marriage were... unconventional. However, he maintains that the emotional breakdown of the marriage was mutual, and he respectfully requests temporary maintenance to secure basic housing."
Judge Harrison dropped her pen onto the bench. The sharp clack echoed through the room.
"Temporary maintenance?" Judge Harrison repeated, her eyebrows arching in utter disbelief. "Mr. Rivera, your client hid a one-hundred-and-eighty-thousand-dollar severance package, laundered it through an unregistered shell LLC, purchased real estate under his mother's name to conceal assets, siphoned over twenty-four thousand dollars for luxury jewelry for a third-party romantic interest, and maintained offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands while claiming to be destitute."
Margaret suddenly leaped to her feet from the gallery bench.
"That's a lie! My son is a good boy! That woman worked him to the bone and starved him!" Margaret shrieked, pointing a crooked finger at me. "She threw an old, sick woman into the cold! I demand justice!"
BAM! BAM! BAM!
Judge Harrison slammed her gavel with thunderous force.
"Bailiff! Remove that woman from my courtroom immediately!" Judge Harrison roared. "One more word from the gallery and you will spend thirty days in county lockup for direct criminal contempt!"
Two armed bailiffs immediately grabbed Margaret by the arms, dragging her screaming and flailing out the heavy wooden doors into the hallway.
Ethan buried his face in his hands on the defense table, shaking with silent sobs.
"Now," Judge Harrison continued, turning her blazing eyes back to Ethan. "Mr. Cross, stand up."
Ethan struggled to his feet, holding onto the edge of the mahogany table for support.
"Under Section 504 and Section 503 of the Illinois Marriage Code, this court finds that you have engaged in catastrophic, intentional dissipation of marital assets," Judge Harrison ruled firmly. "Your request for spousal support is DENIED with prejudice. Your claim of marital equity in petitioner’s Lincoln Park property is DISMISSED with prejudice."
Judge Harrison turned her attention to Evelyn Vance.
"Ms. Vance, what are your client's terms for final decree entry?"
Evelyn stood tall, speaking with absolute authority.
"Your Honor, my client requests the immediate entry of a Default Dissolution Decree under the following terms:
Petitioner retains 100% sole ownership of the Lincoln Park condominium.
The entire balance of the frozen Cayman Islands account—totalling $142,000—is awarded to Petitioner as partial reimbursement for dissipated marital funds.
The Lakeview condominium owned by Apex Horizon Holdings shall be liquidated under judicial receivership, with all net proceeds awarded to Petitioner to satisfy remaining fraud claims.
Respondent Ethan Cross shall assume 100% of all personal debts, including all outstanding liabilities on his vehicle and personal credit accounts.
In exchange for these terms, Petitioner agrees not to pursue additional civil punitive damages."
Judge Harrison looked down at Ethan’s lawyer. "Mr. Rivera, does your client accept these terms, or would he prefer that I refer this entire case directly to the State's Attorney for immediate criminal grand jury indictment on felony grand larceny and tax evasion charges?"
Marcus leaned over, whispering harshly into Ethan’s ear for five seconds.
Ethan slowly raised his tear-stained face. All the pride, all the arrogance, and all the delusions had been stripped away. He was completely broken.

"I... I accept the terms, Your Honor," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking.
"Very well," Judge Harrison declared, bringing her gavel down with a final, decisive strike. "Decree of Dissolution is GRANTED. The settlement is approved and entered into the record. Court is adjourned."
