Chapter 3 - Daniel Wakes Up In An Empty Penthouse With No Board Control

At 6:30 AM in Manhattan, Daniel Mercer woke up with a pounding headache from too much vintage wine and the triumphant high of spending the night celebrating his upcoming merger with Vanessa Cole at a boutique hotel downtown.
He stretched across the eight-thousand-dollar king-size mattress in the penthouse master bedroom, expecting to smell freshly brewed hazelnut coffee and hear the quiet rustling of Claire making breakfast.
The penthouse was dead, freezing, and silent.
Daniel frowned, sitting up. “Claire?”
No answer.
He threw off the silk sheets, walked into the vast open-concept living room, and noticed that the customized nursery stroller and hospital delivery bag were missing from the entryway.
He walked back into the bedroom and finally spotted the bedside table.
Sitting on top of his pillow was Claire’s four-carat platinum wedding ring, resting directly on a certified legal document bearing the bold, embossed red stamp of the Sterling Family Trust.
Daniel picked up the paper, his eyes scanning the first paragraph.
His face drained of every drop of color.
“NOTICE OF IMMEDIATE TERMINATION OF MARITAL RESIDENCY PRIVILEGES AND COMPLETE REVOCATION OF VOTING PROXIES REGARDING MERCER DYNAMICS (NASDAQ: MDYN)...”
“What the hell is this?!” Daniel roared into the empty room.
He grabbed his smartphone from the nightstand and furiously dialed his Chief Financial Officer, Arthur Vance.
Arthur answered on the first ring, his voice trembling with sheer, unadulterated panic.
“Daniel! Thank God you’re awake!” Arthur screamed over the line. “Where are you?! The SEC just published an 8-K material disclosure filing from the Sterling Family Trust!”
“What 8-K filing?!” Daniel yelled, pacing the bedroom in his bathrobe. “Claire is having some childish emotional meltdown! She left her ring on my pillow!”
“It’s not an emotional meltdown, Daniel!” Arthur shouted back. “The Sterling Trust just revoked our thirty-five percent voting proxy! They notified the Board that they are voting against your reappointment as CEO at Monday’s shareholder meeting! The stock is crashing in pre-market trading—MDYN is down thirty-two percent!”
Daniel felt as though someone had punched him in the throat. His vision blurred, his knees going weak against the edge of the bed.
“That’s... that’s impossible,” Daniel stammered, his arrogance cracking down the center. “The Sterling shares are managed by Claire! Claire doesn't know anything about finance! She’s just my pregnant wife!”
“Claire spent nine years restructuring forty-billion-dollar sovereign wealth funds before she met you, you idiot!” Arthur roared. “Her lawyer, Evelyn Cross, just delivered an eviction notice to our corporate headquarters! We have fourteen days to vacate the Madison Avenue tower because the building is owned by her grandfather’s trust!”
Daniel dropped the phone onto the rug.
He stood in the center of the twenty-million-dollar penthouse, looking around at the soaring glass walls, the imported marble floors, and the contemporary art collection.
None of it was his.
None of it had ever been his.

The woman he had called "weak and dependent" had silently held the keys to his entire existence in the palm of her hand.
And with eight simple words on a pillow, she had pulled the pin on his entire life.
