Chapter 8 - The Phantom Bank Accounts

By 2:00 PM that afternoon, Marcus and I were seated in the private boardroom of the Federal Reserve Bank in lower Manhattan, accompanied by two forensic accounting directors.

On the massive digital wall displays, the full, labyrinthine network of the Holloway financial empire was being systematically dismantled line by line, account by account.

"Look at this, Adrian," Marcus said, pointing his laser pointer at a complex cluster of red nodes branching from a primary shell company in Panama. "This was Richard Holloway’s master phantom account: The Cerberus Holding Trust."

"What was in it?" I asked, leaning forward over my espresso cup.

"Everything they stole over the past seven years," the lead forensic auditor explained, typing a series of decryption commands. "When Sarah fell ill, Bradley Vance diverted small, fractional percentages of Sarah’s tech patent royalties into this shell trust. Over six years, those micro-transfers accumulated to over thirty-four million dollars."

"And that’s not all," Marcus added, a grin spreading across his face. "When Vanessa filed the fraudulent pre-nuptial domestic claims yesterday, she accidentally triggered an automatic audit clause embedded in your primary corporate charter. Because she attempted an illegal wire transfer while under active criminal investigation, the entire thirty-four million dollars in the phantom accounts has been legally seized and surrendered to your family trust."

"What about the forty-million-dollar debt Richard owed to the offshore creditors?" I asked.

Marcus laughed—a genuine, hearty laugh of absolute victory.

"Those offshore creditors? Turns out they were legitimate investment funds that Richard had defrauded using fake collateral from Sarah’s estate. Now that the federal government has seized Holloway’s domestic assets, those funds have agreed to settle with us directly. We are acquiring the entire Holloway corporate real estate portfolio for pennies on the dollar."

I leaned back in the leather chair, looking out over the panoramic view of the New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty gleaming in the afternoon sun.

Twenty-four hours ago, I was on the verge of marrying a monster who planned to murder my infant daughter and bankrupt my family.

Now, that monster and her entire corrupt lineage were sitting in federal holding cells, their stolen fortunes reclaimed, their names permanently erased from the business world, while my daughters were safe at home under the loving care of Clara.

My phone buzzed on the table.

It was Detective Miller.

"Adrian," Miller said, his voice carrying a grim satisfaction. "Vanessa’s formal bail hearing just concluded."

"What happened?" I asked.

"The federal judge took one look at the staircase video footage, reviewed Clara’s logbook, and denied bail without prejudice," Miller said. "Vanessa threw a complete tantrum in the courtroom, screamed at her court-appointed lawyer, and had to be physically restrained by four bailiffs. She’s being transferred to the Metropolitan Detention Center right now to await trial in solitary confinement."

"Thank you, Detective," I said softly. "For everything."

"Don't thank me, Adrian," Miller replied with a smile in his voice. "Thank that incredible twelve-year-old daughter of yours. If Olivia hadn't cast that video onto the TV screen when she did, Vanessa might have spun the narrative before we ever got involved."
