Chapter 12 - The Desperate Retaliation

Three weeks later, the legal hammer fell with crushing finality.
The Manhattan Supreme Court convened for the preliminary plea hearings of Vanessa Holloway and Bradley Vance.
The courthouse was surrounded by hundreds of reporters, television satellite trucks, and curious citizens who had followed the sensational case across the national news.
Marcus, Clara, Mateo, and I arrived under private security escort, entering the courtroom through the secure annex.
Inside, the courtroom was packed to the brim.
Vanessa Holloway sat at the defense table, wearing a plain beige prison uniform, her hands cuffed to a leather transport belt around her waist. Her blonde hair was dull and pulled back into a severe ponytail; her face was pale, thin, and hollowed out by weeks of solitary confinement.
When she saw me enter, her eyes flared with a desperate, wild fury.
Her attorney, a prominent public defender assigned after her private legal trust was frozen, stood up and whispered urgently in her ear, trying to calm her down, but Vanessa shook him off violently.
"Your Honor!" Vanessa suddenly shrieked, standing up so abruptly that her chair tipped backward and clattered against the floor. "I demand to be heard!"
"Sit down, defendant!" Judge Robert Harris boomed, slamming his wooden gavel onto the bench with a deafening crack. "Bailiffs, secure the defendant!"
Two armed bailiffs immediately moved in, placing their hands on Vanessa’s shoulders and forcing her back into her seat.
"Adrian Sterling is a liar!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking into hysterical, jagged shrieks that echoed off the marble walls of the courtroom. "He orchestrated the entire thing! He wanted to get rid of me so he wouldn't have to honor our contract! Clara pushed that stroller! Clara is the one who tried to kill Emma!"
Prosecutor Evelyn Vance stood up calmly at the prosecution table, adjusting her glasses.
"Your Honor," Prosecutor Vance said smoothly, her voice cutting through Vanessa’s hysterics with absolute authority. "The People move to submit Exhibit 104: the forensic telecommunications data recovered from Ms. Holloway’s personal cloud account, including authenticated text messages sent thirty seconds prior to the incident, stating to her co-conspirator Bradley Vance: 'The baby is positioned at the top of the stairs. Doing it now.'"
The courtroom gasped as the text message appeared on the large digital monitors mounted across the courtroom walls.
Vanessa looked at the screen.
Her mouth opened, but no sound came out. The final shred of her fabricated reality collapsed beneath the crushing weight of undeniable forensic truth.
Judge Harris glared down from the bench with absolute disgust.
"Ms. Holloway," Judge Harris said, his voice cold and severe as stone. "In my thirty-two years on the bench, I have rarely encountered a defendant with such a profound lack of human empathy and remorse. In light of the overwhelming digital evidence and the formal confessions of your co-defendants, this court finds you guilty on all counts of attempted aggravated murder, child endangerment, grand larceny, and felony extortion."
Judge Harris slammed his gavel down with finality.

"You are hereby sentenced to forty-five years to life at the Bedford Hills Maximum Security Correctional Facility, with no possibility of parole for thirty-five years. Remove the prisoner!"
"NO! NO! ADRIAN!" Vanessa screamed as the bailiffs unhooked her from the table and dragged her toward the holding cells behind the bench. Her heels dragged against the carpet, her frantic cries echoing down the corridor until the heavy steel door slammed shut behind her, cutting her voice off forever.
