Chapter 9 - THE HEIRESS AND THE HAPPY ENDING

“Nobody move!” Charles screamed, his eyes wild and desperate.

He had clearly escaped the security holding room downstairs. His suit was torn, and he looked like a cornered rat.

“I’m leaving here with my daughter!” he shouted, dragging the sobbing nurse into the room. “Get up, Lily! Now!”

Lily screamed, hiding her face under the blankets.

I didn't panic. I didn't cry.

For the first time in my life, looking at the man who had tormented me for years, I felt absolutely nothing but pity.

I slowly stood up.

“No, Charles,” I said calmly.

He blinked, thrown off by my total lack of fear. “I will kill her, Hannah! I swear to God!”

“You’re out of leverage,” I said, taking a slow step toward him. “Arthur is in police custody. Vanessa abandoned you. And you just took a hostage in a hospital owned by the Moretti family.”

I glanced at Luca. He was perfectly still, his eyes locked onto Charles with the calm intensity of an apex predator waiting for the prey to snap its own neck.

“You wanted to be a Moretti so badly,” I said, stepping closer to the sharp edge of the scalpel. “You stole my money. You poisoned my child. You thought I was weak.”

I stopped two feet away from him.

“But I’m not just Hannah Brooks anymore.” I held up the wooden rosary. “I am Valeria Moretti’s daughter.”

Charles stared at the rosary. The realization of what that meant hit him, completely shattering his remaining bravado.

His hand shook. The scalpel wavered.

In that microscopic window of hesitation, Luca struck.

He didn't use a gun. He moved with brutal, terrifying speed, grabbing Charles’s wrist and twisting it backward with a sickening crack.

Charles screamed, dropping the scalpel. The nurse scrambled away.

Luca drove his knee into Charles’s stomach, sending him crashing to the floor. Luca planted his heavy leather shoe squarely on Charles’s chest, pinning him down.

“You are going to prison for a very, very long time,” Luca said, looking down at the broken man. “And if you ever breathe the name of my cousin or her daughter again, I will make sure you never wake up.”

Security flooded the room, dragging a sobbing, defeated Charles away for the final time.

The door closed. The room went quiet.

I turned back to the bed.

Lily pulled the blanket down. She looked at me, her big brown eyes shining.

I climbed onto the narrow hospital bed, pulling her into my lap. She wrapped her arms tightly around my neck, resting her head on my chest.

“Is the bad man gone?” she whispered.

“He’s gone, baby,” I promised, kissing the top of her head. “He is never, ever coming back.”

Luca walked over and placed a gentle hand on Lily’s shoulder, then looked at me.

“Welcome home, Hannah,” he said softly.

Tears of pure joy slipped down my cheeks.

Later that evening, after the doctors gave Lily a clean bill of health, Luca ordered a special delivery.

A nurse brought in a massive silver bowl filled with fresh, bright red strawberries.

Lily’s eyes lit up. She grabbed one and took a huge bite, the juice staining her smiling lips. She offered the other half to me.

“Thank you, Mommy,” she said.

I took the strawberry, my heart completely, wonderfully whole.

We were safe. We were together. And we were finally family.
