Chapter 12 - THE QUEEN OF THE CASTLE

“You're holding forged papers, Vanessa,” I said loudly, my voice echoing off the high stone ceilings.

Vanessa froze, the gun wavering. “What?”

I held up the documents with the official state seal.

“I am Valeria Moretti’s heir. I have the best lawyers in the country. This morning, a federal judge voided Charles’s custody ruling due to gross fraud and attempted murder.” I took a step toward her. “I have full, irrevocable custody of my daughter.”

Vanessa stared at the papers in my hand, her reality shattering.

“But the payout—” she stammered.

“There is no payout,” Luca interrupted coldly. “Elias is dead. His syndicate collapsed yesterday. Your backers are gone, Vanessa. You have absolutely nothing.”

Vanessa looked at the gun in her hand. She was trembling so violently she could barely hold it.

She looked at Luca, expecting mercy. She looked at me, expecting fear.

She found neither.

With a pathetic, broken sob, she dropped the gun onto the hardwood floor. It clattered loudly.

She sank to her knees, burying her face in her hands, weeping as the total weight of her failure crushed her.

Luca calmly picked up the gun, unloaded it, and tossed it onto the desk. He pulled his phone out and dialed his security team, who were waiting at the end of the driveway.

“Come collect the trash,” Luca said simply, then hung up.

Within minutes, two large men entered the house, hauling a crying, broken Vanessa away. The door closed, shutting out the cold wind forever.

The silence that followed wasn't heavy or terrifying. It was peaceful.

Lily peeked out from behind the sofa.

“Is the shouting lady gone?” she asked.

“She’s gone,” I smiled, holding my arms out.

Lily ran to me, jumping into my embrace. I spun her around, her innocent laughter filling the vast, beautiful room.

Later that night, a fire crackled warmly in the massive stone hearth.

Lily was sound asleep on the plush rug, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, her stuffed bear clutched tightly to her chest. I sat beside her, gently stroking her hair, humming the soft lullaby I used to sing to her when she was a baby.

Luca sat on the sofa behind us, watching us with a look of profound peace.

I finished the song, tucked the blanket under Lily’s chin, and stood up.

I walked over to the sofa and sat next to Luca.

He turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto mine. The unspoken tension between us had finally settled into something beautiful, solid, and real.

“You make a good Queen for this castle,” Luca murmured, his voice rich and deep.

I smiled, leaning my head against his shoulder. His arm instinctively wrapped around me, pulling me close.

“I don't need a castle,” I whispered, looking down at my beautiful, sleeping daughter. “I already have everything I ever wanted.”

Luca leaned down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to the top of my head.

The storm was finally over. We were home.
