Chapter 9 - The Black-Tie Gala of Wolves

At 8:00 PM, the Grand Ballroom of the historic Drake Hotel was a dazzling spectacle of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and Chicago’s wealthiest elite. Over four hundred corporate executives, politicians, and high-society patrons mingled beneath the gold-leaf ceilings, their conversations humming with one predominant rumor: Lucas Bennett was incapacitated, and Victor Sterling was preparing to assume control of Bennett Global.

Victor stood near the grand marble staircase, surrounded by three major board members and a swarm of journalists, holding a flute of vintage Dom Pérignon.

“As vice-chairman, I can assure everyone that Mr. Bennett is resting comfortably under the care of top specialists,” Victor told a reporter with false solemnity. “However, the continuity of Bennett Global is paramount. On Tuesday, the board will take decisive steps to protect our shareholders.”

Suddenly, the heavy mahogany double doors at the top of the grand staircase swung open.

The royal fanfare of conversation in the ballroom vanished into absolute, stunned silence.

Descending the marble stairs was Lucas Bennett.

He wore a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo tailored to perfection, his posture tall, commanding, and radiating untouchable power. His stride was smooth, showing not the slightest hint of weakness or frailty.

And on his arm, captivating the gaze of every single person in the room, was me.

Julian Hayes had spared no expense. I was dressed in an emerald-green silk evening gown that flowed like liquid emerald down to the marble floor, with an off-the-shoulder neckline that highlighted my collarbones. My hair was swept into an elegant, timeless chignon, and resting against my throat was a breathtaking diamond-and-emerald necklace that had once belonged to Lucas’s mother.

Whispers exploded through the crowd like wildfire.

“Is that Lucas? He looks completely healthy!”

“Who is that stunning woman on his arm? Is she European royalty?”

“Look at Victor’s face... he looks like he’s seen a ghost!”

Victor’s champagne glass nearly slipped from his fingers. His face drained of all color, his eyes bulging in sheer terror as he stared at Lucas—and then at me.

Lucas guided me down the final steps, his hand resting possessively and warmly over mine. He paused directly in front of Victor Sterling.

“Victor,” Lucas said, his voice ringing clearly across the silent ballroom. “You look surprised to see me. Didn't you receive my RSVP?”

Victor swallowed hard, forcing a grotesque, sweating smile onto his face. “Lucas! What a... what an unexpected miracle. We were told you were on strict bed rest. And who... who is your charming companion?”

Lucas turned toward me, his smile filled with genuine adoration that silenced every critic in the room.

“Allow me to introduce Miss Bailey Vance,” Lucas announced loudly so every board member and journalist could hear. “Bailey is not only my guest of honor tonight; she is the newest Executive Director of the Bennett Medical Foundation and the most brilliant woman I have ever known.”

A prominent female board member, Mrs. Eleanor Vance (no relation), stepped forward, eyeing my emerald necklace in awe. “Mr. Bennett, she is breathtaking. Where did you two meet?”

Lucas locked eyes with Victor, his gaze sharpening into twin daggers of ice.

“Bailey saved my life, Eleanor,” Lucas said calmly. “When certain cowards tried to ensure I took my last breath in the dark, Bailey stepped into the storm and pulled me back into the light. She showed me the difference between those who build empires with honor... and those who hide in the shadows with poison.”

Victor’s hands began to shake visibly. He took a hasty step backward. “Lucas, please, this is a charity event. If you have corporate matters to discuss, we should do so in private—”

“Oh, we will discuss everything in private very soon, Victor,” Lucas murmured, leaning in so close only Victor could hear his next words. “Enjoy your champagne tonight, Victor. Because by Tuesday morning, you will be drinking from a tin cup in a federal holding cell.”

Victor turned on his heel and fled toward the VIP lounge, his facade completely destroyed.

I looked up at Lucas, my heart soaring with triumph. He looked down at me, his green eyes sparkling with pride, and under the brilliant light of the chandeliers, he whispered:

“One strike down, Bailey. Now we deliver the final blow.”
