Chapter 10 - Secrets Unearthed in the Shadows

Following the triumph at the Drake Hotel gala, the conspirators began to panic.
At 1:00 AM on Monday morning, while Chicago slept under a fresh blanket of sleet, our tactical intelligence team received an urgent alert. Julian’s private cyber-security unit had successfully tapped the encrypted cell phone of Marcus Thorne, Bennett Global’s chief financial comptroller and Victor Sterling’s primary co-conspirator.
Inside the penthouse war room, the laptop screens glowed with intercepted audio streams and live security feeds.
“Victor, we are finished!” Thorne’s voice screamed through the speaker, bordering on hysteria. “He was at the gala! He looked completely healthy! If he audits the Swiss accounts tomorrow before the board meeting, he will see the four-million-dollar wire transfer to the chemical laboratory in Prague!”
“Calm down, you idiot!” Victor’s venomous voice snarled back. “The physical paper ledger and the encrypted backup drives containing the wire authorizations are still stored in the sub-basement archive vault at Meridian Tower. Lucas’s private security hasn't seized that wing yet because it requires dual biometric clearance.”
“What are you going to do?”
“I’m going to the tower right now,” Victor ordered. “I will wipe the archive servers and incinerate the paper files in the industrial incinerator before 4:00 AM. Meet me at the south riverfront entrance with the security overrides. Once the evidence is ash, it will be his word against ours!”
The call disconnected with a sharp click.
Julian Hayes stood up, reaching for his coat. “I’ll mobilize our private tactical team immediately. We will surround Meridian Tower and intercept them at the entrance.”
“No,” Lucas commanded, rising from his chair. His eyes were cold, calculating, and ablaze with absolute determination. “If security raids the building, Victor’s lawyers will claim unlawful search and seizure before the board can see the evidence. We need to catch him in the act—inside the vault, holding the physical ledgers in his own hands.”
“Lucas, your ribs are still healing,” I stepped forward, placing a firm hand on his arm. “Your heart cannot sustain an adrenaline spike or physical combat. It’s too dangerous!”
Lucas placed his hand over mine, his touch warm, reassuring, and filled with deep conviction.
“I have spent three years watching men like Victor abuse their power, Bailey,” he said softly. “He tried to destroy you. He tried to erase what you did. I will not sit in a penthouse while others fight my battles. But I need you with me. I need your diagnostic kit, and I need your strength.”
I looked into his eyes, knowing there was no talking him out of it. “Then we go together. But if your heart rate spikes above one-ten, we abort.”
“Understood, Medical Director,” he smiled softly.
Twenty minutes later, an unmarked SUV slipped through the icy back streets of downtown Chicago, pulling into the darkened, snow-covered service alley beneath Meridian Tower.
The building was completely silent, towering fifty floors into the midnight sky like a sleeping titan. Using Howard Mills’s old master overrides and Lucas’s founder-level access codes, our four-man team slipped through the subterranean maintenance corridors, descending three levels beneath the street into the cold, concrete catacombs of the archive vault.
The air smelled of damp stone, dust, and ozone.
As we approached the heavy steel blast doors of Archive Vault 3, a flicker of light leaked through the reinforced glass window.
Inside, illuminated by a single halogen work lamp, was Victor Sterling.
He was furiously shoving thick binders of bank transaction records into a steel burn barrel, holding a handheld industrial blowtorch in his right hand. Beside him, two rogue security guards were dismantling hard drives from the server rack with crowbars.

“He’s destroying everything,” Julian whispered.
Lucas gripped his cane, his jaw tightening into iron. “Not on my watch.”
