Chapter 8 - The Calumet Harbor Ultimatum

The silence in the recovery room was deafening.

I stood frozen in the center of the room, my hands shaking so violently I couldn't even form a fist. The world seemed to dissolve into a gray, horrifying nightmare. My sweet, frail grandmother, who had spent her entire life sacrificing for me, was in the hands of sadistic butchers who skinned their enemies alive.

“I’m going,” I said, my voice dead, flat, and hollow.

“No, you’re not,” Vincent commanded instantly, throwing back the heavy medical blankets and swinging his legs over the side of the hospital bed.

“Boss, you can’t stand!” Luke yelled, rushing forward to support him. “Your stitches will burst! You’ll bleed out in minutes!”

Vincent violently shoved Luke away, his face contorting in pure, animalistic fury as he forced himself to his feet. Blood instantly seeped through the white bandages around his abdomen, staining the cotton, but he didn't even flinch. The raw power and bloodlust radiating off him made the air in the room drop ten degrees.

“Call the entire northern fleet,” Vincent growled, his voice a low, terrifying thunderclap that rattled the glass windows. “Call every mercenary, every capo, and every hitman under the Hayes banner. Tell them to load heavy artillery, thermite charges, and armor-piercing rounds.”

He turned to Luke, his gray eyes burning with demonic fire.

“Tonight, we do not negotiate. Tonight, we do not take prisoners. Tonight, the Moretti bloodline ceases to exist in the state of Illinois.”

Vincent turned his gaze toward me. He walked over, placing his large, warm hands on both sides of my face, forcing me to look directly into his eyes.

“Look at me, Claire,” he ordered, his voice steadying the panic inside my chest.

I looked into his eyes through a veil of hot tears.

“I am going to bring your grandmother back to you alive and unharmed,” Vincent swore, his voice etching the promise into stone. “And then I am going to execute Mario Moretti with my bare hands. Trust me.”

“I’m coming with you,” I insisted, grabbing his wrists. “I am not staying behind in this fortress while you fight for my family!”

Vincent stared at me for three long seconds. In any other woman, such a demand would have been madness. But he knew the fire inside me.

“Luke,” Vincent barked without looking away from me. “Get her tactical armor. And give her a nine-millimeter weapon.”

By eleven o'clock that night, Calumet Harbor was engulfed in a ferocious blizzard.

The abandoned industrial shipping docks on the edge of the frozen lake were a maze of rusting cargo containers, towering crane skeletons, and decaying warehouses. The wind howled off the black ice, whipping snow in blinding, whiteout sheets across the deserted concrete piers.

Parked in the center of Warehouse 4 was a convoy of six black SUVs belonging to the Moretti crime syndicate.

Inside the freezing, cavernous warehouse, tied securely to a rusted iron chair beneath a single hanging spotlight, sat Grandma Clara. Her lips were blue from the cold, and she was shivering violently, but her eyes remained remarkably calm and defiant.

Standing behind her, holding a gold-plated Desert Eagle pistol, was Mario Moretti, flanked by thirty heavily armed mercenaries with assault rifles.

The massive metal sliding doors of the warehouse groaned and screeched as they were pushed open.

A single silhouette stepped through the swirling snow and into the beam of light.

It was me.

I was wearing a heavy black winter parka over a Kevlar tactical vest, my boots crunching against the frost-covered concrete.

Mario’s face split into a triumphant, grotesque sneer. “The brave little cleaner arrives on time! And look at you, wearing a vest like a real soldier. Where is your lover, Claire? Did Vincent die in his own hospital bed like a dog?”

“Let my grandmother go, Mario,” I called out, my voice echoing off the corrugated steel walls. “You have me. She has nothing to do with this.”

“Oh, sweetheart,” Mario laughed, cocking the hammer of his gun. “In this business, collateral damage is the whole point. Once I put a bullet through the old woman’s brain, I’m going to make you watch as my men take over every square inch of Vincent’s territory.”

“Is that so, Mario?” a deep, thunderous voice echoed from the rafters above.

Mario’s smile froze. His eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror.

Before anyone could look up, the glass skylights along the warehouse ceiling exploded inward in a deafening shower of crystalline shards!

Dozens of flashbang grenades dropped from the ceiling, detonating in a blinding, concussive storm of white light and thunderous explosions.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Mercenaries screamed in agony, clutching their blinded eyes and ruptured eardrums.

And descending through the shattered skylights on tactical rappelling ropes, clad in full combat gear with assault weapons blazing, was Vincent Hayes and the Hayes elite vanguard.
