Chapter 15 - The Queen of Chicago (The End)

Six months later, the city of Chicago was bathed in the glorious, golden warmth of midsummer.

The Cathedral of the Holy Name on State Street was closed to the public under the highest level of security the city had ever witnessed. Over eight hundred guests—dignitaries, philanthropists, reformed community leaders, and the entire leadership of Hayes Global—filled the grand sanctuary adorned with thousands of cascading white roses and lilies.

At the altar stood Vincent Hayes.

He was breathtaking in a custom midnight-blue tuxedo, his posture commanding and proud, his eyes fixed with laser focus on the massive wooden doors at the back of the cathedral.

The massive pipe organ roared to life, playing the triumphant, soaring notes of the bridal processional.

The double doors swung wide open.

I stepped onto the white silk aisle runner, holding the arm of Father Thomas, who had graciously offered to escort me down the aisle.

My wedding gown was an absolute masterpiece of French lace and silk satin, featuring a sweetheart bodice embroidered with thousands of micro-pearls, an open back, and a fifteen-foot cathedral train that floated like a cloud behind me. On my neck rested the original emerald pendant Vincent had given me on the night of the gala, and upon my head was a delicate tiara of platinum and diamonds.

Sitting in the very front pew, looking radiant in a lavender silk dress, was Grandma Clara, beaming with immense pride, dabbing her eyes with a lace handkerchief.

As I walked down the aisle, my gaze locked onto Vincent’s.

For the second time in our lives, the ruthless mafia kingpin of Chicago looked completely overwhelmed, his slate-gray eyes glistening with unshed tears of pure adoration as he watched his bride approach.

When I reached the altar, Father Thomas placed my hand into Vincent’s.

Vincent’s grip was warm, strong, and steady. He leaned down and whispered into my ear, “You are the most beautiful vision this world has ever seen, Mrs. Hayes.”

“And you clean up remarkably well, Mr. Hayes,” I whispered back with a radiant smile.

Before God, our family, and the entire city of Chicago, we exchanged our vows.

“I, Vincent Hayes, take you, Claire Montgomery, to be my wife, my partner, and my sovereign. To stand before you as your shield, to walk beside you as your equal, and to love you beyond the end of time.”

“I, Claire Montgomery, take you, Vincent Hayes, to be my husband, my protector, and my heart. To challenge you in the light, to stand with you in the dark, and to love you fiercely for all the days of my life.”

The archbishop raised his hands in solemn blessing. “By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Son... you may kiss your bride.”

Vincent didn't wait for another second. He wrapped his arm around my waist, pulled me flush against his chest, and kissed me with all the fierce, desperate love in his soul, sealing our union as thunderous applause erupted throughout the historic cathedral.

That evening, the grand reception was held on the private grounds of the Hayes Lakefront estate.

Thousands of fairy lights twinkled in the ancient oak trees, floating lanterns drifted across the calm waters of Lake Michigan, and a thirty-piece orchestra played beneath a canopy of stars.

Near midnight, Vincent and I slipped away from the bustling reception ballroom, walking hand in hand down to the edge of the private marble pier jutting out over the water.

The warm summer breeze brushed against my veil. The city skyline of Chicago glittered in the distance across the black water—a city that once threatened to crush me, but now bowed respectfully before the life we had built together.

Vincent stood behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder as we looked out over the sparkling horizon.

“Do you remember what you told me in that elevator, Claire?” he whispered softly, his voice full of amusement.

I smiled, turning my head to press a gentle kiss to his jawline.

“I told you that power isn’t permission,” I replied.

Vincent turned me around in his arms, his slate-gray eyes reflecting the starlight, filled with infinite love and complete surrender.

“You were right,” Vincent said softly, his thumb caressing my cheek. “Power isn’t permission. But love... love is the only true empire.”

He kissed me once more beneath the starlit Chicago sky—a king who had finally found his peace, and the cleaning girl who had conquered his heart.
