Chapter 8 - Shattered Illusions and the Real Reason I Was Locked Away

The convoy did not return to the gilded cages of Long Island. Instead, we drove deep into the White Mountains of New Hampshire, ascending a private, heavily guarded peak where a massive stone-and-timber estate stood fortified against the winter sky.

The Blackwood Estate was not a display of opulence; it was an impenetrable redoubt. Bulletproof glass three inches thick, anti-drone jammers humming on the roofline, and Roman’s most trusted inner guard patrolling the perimeter with silent precision.

When we arrived, Roman carried me directly to the master suite on the top floor. A private physician and two female nurses were already waiting.

“Check the baby,” Roman ordered, stepping back against the wall, his arms crossed over his chest. “Check the bruising on her cheek. If she needs a hospital, I will bring the entire surgical wing here by helicopter.”

For the next hour, I endured blood pressure cuffs, monitors, and another ultrasound. Hearing our daughter’s rapid, steady heartbeat inside the quiet room made Roman’s eyes close for three long seconds, his jaw tightening as if absorbing an overwhelming blow.

“She is perfectly healthy, Mr. Carter,” the doctor announced gently. “The mother suffered minor soft-tissue bruising, but the placenta is intact and the baby is thriving.”

“Leave us,” Roman said.

When the heavy oak door clicked shut, the silence between us was suffocating.

I sat on the massive bed, clutching a cashmere blanket around my shoulders. Roman remained by the stone fireplace, watching the flames roar. He had changed into dry clothes, but the exhaustion etched into his features was undeniable. He looked ten years older, the dark shadows under his eyes telling the story of months without sleep.

“Why didn't you tell me?” I finally whispered. “If you were getting out... why did you keep me in the dark?”

Roman looked at me, a bitter smile touching his lips.

“Do you know what happens to a mafia boss who announces he’s retiring, Evelyn?” he asked, stepping slowly toward the bed. “Every lieutenant tries to kill him to take the crown. Every rival syndicate tries to exterminate his bloodline to prevent a comeback. If Bennett had known I was negotiating with the Department of Justice to legitimize the Carter estate, he would have attacked our home instantly.”

He stopped beside the bed, looking down at me with devastating intensity.

“I kept you in the dark to protect your innocence. If the feds questioned you, you had clean hands. If Bennett took you, you had no secrets to give up. I thought I was shielding you. Instead... I drove you into the cold with my daughter inside you.”

“You treated me like a possession, Roman,” I said, tears spilling over my lashes. “You had guards follow me to the grocery store. You monitored my phone calls. I was a prisoner with a diamond ring.”

Roman dropped to one knee before me, taking my cold hands into his scarred palms.

“I watched my mother get executed in our driveway when I was eight years old because my father was careless,” he said, his voice raw and shaking. “I swore to God that if I ever loved a woman, she would never be vulnerable. But I confused protection with control. I terrified the only person who gave my life any meaning.”

He rested his forehead against my knees, his broad shoulders trembling slightly.

“I don't expect you to forgive me, Evelyn. But let me finish Bennett. Let me bury this war. And when our daughter is born, if you still want to leave... I will give you the deed to the world and never cast a shadow over your life again.”
