Chapter 15 - The Ocean Breeze, Our Daughter’s Smile, and Forever Free (The End)

Three Years Later

The warm summer breeze carried the scent of salty ocean water and blooming honeysuckle across the porch of our cedar-shingled home in Camden, Maine.

Below the bluff, the gentle waves of the Atlantic lapped against the rocky shoreline where our small wooden sailboat bobbed at the private dock. There were no armed guards patrolling the perimeter. There were no hidden surveillance cameras in the trees. There was only the sound of seagulls calling in the distance and the sweet, melodic laughter of a child.

“Daddy, look! Catch me!”

Three-year-old Grace, her dark curls bouncing in the sunlight, sprinted across the lush green lawn, holding a bright yellow dandelion high in the air.

Roman emerged from the garden shed, wearing a simple linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, faded jeans, and dirt on his hands from planting rosebushes. The lethal, shadowy mafia boss who once terrified the Eastern seaboard had completely vanished. In his place stood a man with laugh lines around his warm, dark eyes and an easy, genuine smile.

Roman lunged forward with a playful growl, sweeping Grace off her feet and tossing her gently into the air before catching her against his broad chest.

Grace shrieked with laughter, wrapping her little arms around his neck and pressing the crumpled dandelion against his cheek. “For you, Daddy! Because you’re the best!”

“Thank you, my princess,” Roman laughed, kissing her cheek noisily until she giggled uncontrollably. “It’s the most beautiful flower in the world.”

I stood at the porch railing, holding two glasses of freshly squeezed lemonade, watching the two people who held my entire soul in their hands.

Roman caught my eye. His smile softened into that deep, breathless gaze that had captivated me years ago in that little Queens bakery—only now, it was completely free of shadows, possessiveness, or fear. It was pure, unconditional love.

He carried Grace up the porch steps, setting her down near her wooden easel where she immediately began painting with vibrant watercolors.

Roman walked behind me, wrapping his strong, scarred arms around my waist, pulling my back flush against his chest. He rested his chin on my shoulder, inhaling the scent of my hair as the afternoon sun cast a warm golden light over our peaceful home.

“What are you thinking about, my love?” he whispered, his warm breath tickling my ear.

I leaned back against him, resting my hands over his forearms.

“I’m thinking about the night I ran,” I said softly, looking out over the endless, glittering blue ocean. “I thought I was running away from you forever.”

Roman tightened his embrace, pressing a tender kiss to the side of my neck.

“You weren't running away from me, Evelyn,” Roman murmured with profound gratitude. “You were leading me home.”

I turned in his arms, wrapping my hands around his neck, looking into the dark eyes that were no longer a prison, but my eternal sanctuary.

When his lips met mine, gentle, warm, and full of quiet promises for a long, peaceful lifetime, I knew with absolute certainty that we were finally, truly free.

THE END
