Chapter 8 - The Predatory Landlord, the Midnight Rescue, and the Golden Cage

The boardroom on the 50th floor of the Vance Tower was suffocating with tension.

My mother, Eleanor Vance, sat at the head of the mahogany conference table, dressed in a sharp charcoal Chanel suit, her silver hair styled into an immovable coiffure. Beside her sat Arthur Pendelton, sweating profusely through his white collar, and three senior board members representing our largest institutional investors.

On the large wall-mounted monitor, Richard Sterling—Victoria’s father and the titan of Sterling Global—was connected via encrypted video link from New York.

As I walked through the double frosted-glass doors, the room fell into an icy silence.

I didn't take my customary seat at the head of the table. I remained standing, tossing my leather portfolio onto the center of the table with a dull thud.

“Noah,” Eleanor began, her voice dripping with aristocratic ice. “We have been waiting thirty minutes. The press is downstairs in the lobby waiting for the official announcement of the Sterling-Vance strategic alliance and your engagement to Victoria. Sit down so we can finalize the filings.”

I looked at my mother—the woman who had used private investigators and corporate sabotage to destroy my wife’s career from the shadows.

“The merger is canceled,” I said, my voice echoing off the glass walls with absolute clarity. “And there will be no engagement.”

Gasps erupted around the table. Arthur jumped to his feet. “Noah, you can’t do this! The stock will plummet fifteen percent on market open!”

Richard Sterling’s face turned crimson on the monitor. “Noah Vance, if you pull out of this deal, Sterling Global will call in every revolving credit facility we co-underwrite in Chicago! We will bleed your firm dry!”

“Go ahead and try, Richard,” I said coldly, turning my gaze to the screen. “I spent the last six hours transferring my personal equity reserves out of the collective pool. You can call in the debts on Vance Enterprises, but you can’t touch my personal liquid assets. And if you attempt a hostile takeover, I will personally release the audio recordings of your insider trading coordination with the SEC before the market closes today.”

Richard Sterling’s mouth snapped shut. He looked at Arthur in absolute panic.

Eleanor slowly stood up, leaning her knuckles against the table, her eyes narrowing into cold slits.

“You’re throwing away an empire for that low-class girl and her bastard child?” Eleanor hissed, dropping all corporate decorum. “Do you think she loves you, Noah? She hid that child from you for a year! She’s playing you for a multi-million-dollar child support settlement!”

I walked slowly around the table until I was standing directly in front of my mother.

“Her name is Elizabeth,” I said, every syllable vibrating with suppressed fury. “And that child is your granddaughter, Maya Vance. But you will never meet her. You will never hold her. You will never step foot in any house where she lives.”

“Noah, I am your mother!” Eleanor gasped, shocked by the venom in my voice.

“You destroyed my marriage,” I replied, looking down at her with complete detachment. “You used your wealth to crush the dreams of the only woman who ever loved me for who I was, not what I owned. Effective immediately, I resign as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Vance Enterprises.”

I pulled my company badge from my pocket, threw it onto the table, and turned on my heel.

“Noah! If you walk through those doors, you leave with nothing!” Eleanor screamed behind me. “We will strip your options! We will lock you out of the family trusts!”

May you like

I paused at the threshold of the boardroom, looking back over my shoulder with a cold smile.

“Keep the money, Mother,” I said. “I’m going home to my family.”
