Chapter 13 - Unmasking the Corporate Saboteur Who Tore Their Lives Apart

The following Monday, justice arrived with the precision of a guillotine.
Federal marshals and SEC investigators raided the headquarters of Sterling Global in New York, arresting Richard Sterling for massive wire fraud, market manipulation, and corporate espionage. The documents and recordings I had provided to the Department of Justice laid bare three years of illegal sabotage orchestrated by Sterling and my mother to monopolize Midwest real estate.
Eleanor Vance was forced into immediate, disgrace-filled retirement, signing over her voting rights to an independent board of trustees to avoid criminal indictment.
As for Arthur Pendelton, the CFO who had betrayed my family for a promised seat on the Sterling board? He was escorted out of Vance Tower in handcuffs, his reputation in the financial sector annihilated forever.
I spent that Monday morning sitting on the floor of the Lake Forest living room, building towers out of wooden blocks with Maya.
Maya would laugh gleefully, swinging her chubby arms to knock the wooden blocks down, babbling excitedly: “Dah! Boom!”
“She’s a master of creative destruction, just like her father,” Elizabeth teased, walking in with a tray of freshly baked cookies and setting them on the coffee table.
She wore a simple cotton sundress, her hair flowing freely down her back, the diamond ring sparkling in the afternoon sunlight streaming through the windows.
I looked up at her, catching her hand and pulling her down onto my lap.
“I’m done with destruction, Ellie,” I said, resting my chin on her shoulder as Maya crawled over to inspect my leather shoes. “From now on, we only build.”
“Speaking of building,” Elizabeth said, her eyes shining with excitement, “the city approved the ground-breaking date for the Pavilion. October 14th.”

I smiled softly. “Maya’s first birthday.”
“Maya’s first birthday,” Elizabeth confirmed, turning in my arms to press a soft, lingering kiss to my lips. “The day our new life officially begins.”
