Chapter 13 - The Dead Man Walks into the Boardroom

At precisely 2:00 PM, the grand auditorium of the Moretti Maritime Tower was packed to maximum capacity.

Over two hundred major shareholders, international maritime delegates, city officials, and dozens of broadcast news cameras filled the tiered seating. The atmosphere was thick with tension; rumors of Marcus Vale’s sudden arrest at Pier Nine had begun circulating on social media fifteen minutes earlier.

Sitting at the center of the executive stage was Vice Chairman Arthur Pendelton, an elderly financier who looked completely overwhelmed.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please take your seats,” Pendelton announced into the microphone. “Due to extraordinary and... unforeseen legal developments involving Mr. Vale, today’s vote regarding the merger with the Apex Conglomerate will be temporarily postponed—”

The heavy double oak doors at the back of the auditorium slammed open with the force of a gunshot.

The entire room fell dead silent.

Every head turned.

Walking down the center aisle, flanked by four uniformed State Police captains and forensic financial examiners, was Adrian Moretti.

He walked with an upright, commanding stride, his eyes fixed on the stage, wearing his signature navy three-piece suit with a silver pocket watch chain draped across his vest.

Gasping shouts erupted from the crowd.

Reporters jumped out of their seats, camera flashes exploding in a blinding wall of white light.

“My God! It’s Moretti!”

“He’s alive!”

“Adrian Moretti has returned!”

Adrian stepped onto the stage, walked up to the podium, and gently motioned for Pendelton to take a seat.

The room was in absolute pandemonium. Reporters were shouting questions over one another, while board members stood frozen with their mouths open.

Adrian leaned toward the microphone.

He didn't shout. He didn't raise his voice. He simply spoke with the quiet, absolute authority that had ruled the waterfront for a decade.

“Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.”

The auditorium immediately hushed into breathless silence.

“Reports of my death,” Adrian said with a subtle, icy smirk, “were greatly exaggerated by people who lacked both the competence to run this company and the spine to face me in the daylight.”

He laid a black leather portfolio onto the podium.

“As of twelve o'clock today, the State Attorney General’s office, in conjunction with the Federal Maritime Commission, has frozen all assets associated with Marcus Vale, Viktor Cruz, and the Apex Conglomerate. Every fraudulent share transfer executed under the forged will has been nullified by the Supreme Court of this state.”

Adrian looked directly into the main television camera broadcasting live to the entire nation.

“Moretti Shipping is not for sale. The criminal syndicates that attempted to use our harbor as a conduit for poison will find their vessels impounded and their leaders behind bars. Ravenport belongs to the men and women who build it, who sweat on its docks, and who honor its name.”

He closed the portfolio with an authoritative snap.

“The meeting is adjourned. The boss is back.”

The entire room erupted into a standing ovation that shook the glass walls of the tower.
