Chapter 12 - Elena’s Collapse and the Confession

At 1:30 PM, thirty minutes before the scheduled shareholder assembly, two State Police cruisers pulled up to the private executive entrance of the Moretti Maritime Tower.
Lieutenant Sarah Chen of the Major Crimes Division walked into the executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor, holding an arrest warrant and a thick stack of signed affidavits.
Inside the room, Elena Moretti was sitting alone at the head of the conference table, staring vacantly at the silver pen in her hand.
“Mrs. Moretti?” Lieutenant Chen asked, showing her gold badge.
Elena didn't look surprised. She looked exhausted, as if a terrible weight had finally been lifted from her shoulders.
“Is Marcus dead?” Elena asked quietly.
“Marcus Vale is in custody at the state medical detention facility, facing charges of attempted murder, corporate fraud, and conspiracy to traffic controlled substances,” Chen replied. “And your husband’s legal team has just submitted your signed confession, along with the unedited audio recordings from the St. Jude Chapel.”
Elena closed her eyes. Two slow tears rolled down her cheeks, washing away the last traces of her makeup.
“I was so stupid,” she whispered. “Marcus told me Adrian would never find out. He told me it would look like an accident.”
“Stand up, please,” Chen said, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt.
Elena stood up without resistance. She held out her wrists, the heavy diamond bracelet Adrian had given her on their fifth anniversary sparkling under the fluorescent office lights.
As the steel cuffs clicked around her wrists, Elena looked out the panoramic window overlooking Ravenport Harbor.
Far below, she saw the dark blue waters where she had sent her husband to die.

“He really is unstoppable, isn't he?” Elena murmured.
Lieutenant Chen didn't answer. She simply guided the fallen widow toward the private elevator, leading her away to face the justice she had tried so desperately to escape.
