Chapter 7 - A Shadow Across the Border

Six months had passed since the birth of Leo, and while Norah had found a fragile sanctuary in Cape Whisper, the criminal underworld of the Northeast was bleeding.

In Boston, the power vacuum caused by Matteo’s singular obsession with finding his wife had escalated into a bloody turf war. The Moretti family, led by the ruthless and sadistic Don Emilio Moretti, had launched coordinated strikes against Rossi shipping hubs.

Emilio Moretti was not a man who fought fair. He knew he couldn't defeat Matteo Rossi in a straight gunfight; Matteo was a tactical genius when his mind was engaged. But Emilio had informants everywhere, and he had finally connected the pieces.

In a smoke-filled private room at an underground Boston club, Emilio sat opposite a corrupt regional telecom technician.

“Show me,” Emilio demanded, slamming a stack of dirty cash onto the table.

The technician opened his laptop. “Boss, six months ago, during that massive hurricane up north, an encrypted burner phone registered a single failed ping to a medical clinic in Cape Whisper, Maine. The IMEI serial number matched the digital footprint of the device purchased in South Boston—the one linked to Vincent Vance’s daughter.”

Emilio’s scarred face twisted into a grotesque, predatory smile.

“Vincent’s clever little girl,” Emilio purred. “She didn't just steal Matteo’s contingency funds. She took his only heir.”

Emilio understood the leverage. If he captured Norah and Matteo’s son, he wouldn't just win a turf war—he would bring Matteo Rossi to his knees, force him to sign over every port and territory from Boston to Montreal, and then slaughter the entire Rossi bloodline in one stroke.

“Assemble a wet-work team,” Emilio ordered his top enforcer, a cold-blooded killer named Vance Riker. “Five men. Unmarked sedans. No automatic weapons until you’re inside the house—we don’t want the state police locking down the highway before we have the baby in our hands. Bring the girl and the kid alive. Kill anyone else in the vicinity.”

“What about Matteo’s perimeter scouts?” Riker asked.

“Matteo is still searching private hospitals in Europe and luxury resorts in South America,” Emilio laughed darkly. “He thinks his queen is living like royalty. He has no idea she’s hiding like a gutter rat in a fishing village. Move tonight.”

Meanwhile, at the Rossi estate, Matteo was staring at the exact same data point.

It had taken his forensic IT specialists six grueling months of brute-forcing corrupted cell tower logs from the night of the hurricane to isolate that single, half-second emergency ping.

Matteo stood in the center of his command room, his overcoat already on, twin Glock 19s holstered beneath his tailored suit.

“Boss, let me mobilize the entire tactical squad,” Arthur urged, checking his own sidearm. “We can send forty men in five helicopters.”

“No,” Matteo said, his voice deadly and focused for the first time in half a year. “If forty armed men land in a sleepy Maine town, Emilio Moretti’s informants in the state police will hear the radio chatter within ten minutes. Emilio has been watching our troop movements. If he realizes where I’m going, he’ll send an assault team to intercept.”

Matteo loaded a fresh magazine into his sidearm with a sharp, metallic snap.

“Just you and me, Arthur. We take the high-speed cruiser by water. We arrive from the harbor before Emilio even knows the game has started.”

“Matteo... what do you plan to do when you see her?” Arthur asked quietly.

Matteo looked at his scarred hands. For six months, he had dreamed of this moment. He had imagined what he would say, how he would beg, how he would explain the hollow hell his life had become without her.

“I’m going to make sure she lives,” Matteo said softly. “Even if she never looks at me again.”
