Chapter 13 - Dismantling the Dark Empire

Matteo did not stay in Maine.

True to his word, as the first rays of dawn broke over the Atlantic, he walked to the marina, boarded his tactical cruiser with Arthur, and headed south back toward the war zone of Massachusetts.

Norah had not welcomed him back into her life. She had not kissed him goodbye. But when he walked out the door, she had handed him a thermos of hot black coffee and a small, fresh loaf of sourdough bread from her bakery.

“Don’t die in Boston, Matteo,” she had said quietly from the porch. “Leo doesn't need a dead man’s money. He needs a world where he doesn't have to look over his shoulder.”

Those words became Matteo Rossi’s crusade.

When he landed in Boston, he didn't launch a defensive campaign. He launched an extinction-level event.

Over the next ninety days, Matteo systematically dismantled the East Coast mafia infrastructure.

First, he handled Emilio Moretti.

Using the tactical intelligence extracted from Riker’s encrypted communications, Matteo led a surgical strike on the Moretti headquarters in South Boston. In one bloody, decisive night, Emilio’s entire leadership structure was neutralized, his illicit drug operations burned to the ground, and Emilio himself was handed over to a specialized federal anti-racketeering task force with an ironclad paper trail of evidence provided directly from Vincent Vance’s old contingency files.

Matteo didn't keep the spoils of war.

He met with the heads of the remaining five syndicates in a neutral high-rise boardroom in New York.

He threw his gold signet ring—the symbol of the Rossi mafia lineage—onto the center of the mahogany conference table.

“The Rossi family is out,” Matteo declared to the stunned underbosses. “The docks are surrendered to the port authority. The casinos are sold to commercial hospitality conglomerates. Every illicit racket in Massachusetts is closed permanently.”

“You can’t just walk away, Rossi!” an old New York boss shouted. “Our world doesn't work that way!”

Matteo leaned across the table, his eyes carrying a lethal darkness that silenced the entire room.

“I am not asking for your permission,” Matteo whispered. “If any family crosses the state line into Boston, or if anyone ever speaks the name of Claire or Leo Jensen, I will not send soldiers. I will come for you myself. Every dollar I have left is now funding the most sophisticated private intelligence network on earth. Test me, and see what happens.”

No one spoke. No one moved.

Over the following six months, Matteo executed the most comprehensive corporate restructuring in the city’s history. He liquidated every illegal asset, paid hundreds of millions in federal back-taxes and penalties through top-tier corporate attorneys, and transformed the Rossi empire into a completely legitimate commercial logistics and philanthropic conglomerate.

He stepped down as CEO, handing complete administrative control to a board of independent directors, reserving only one duty for himself: the management of the private security trust dedicated to the protection of Cape Whisper, Maine.

He had burned his kingdom to the ground.

And for the first time in his life, Matteo Rossi was clean.
