Chapter 13 - The Mask Crumbles in Iron Cuffs

Six months later.

The United States District Court for the Eastern District was packed to maximum capacity for the sentencing hearing of United States v. Julian Van Doren, Sloane Van Doren, Alistair Finch, and Marcus Vance.

The trial had dominated international headlines for twenty-four weeks, peeling back the polished veneer of the high-society elite to expose a grotesque empire of corporate extortion, medical homicide, forgery, and predatory child abuse.

The evidence presented by the federal prosecution had been utterly insurmountable.

Over eight hundred decrypted files from Linda Mercer’s drive, fifty hours of covert audio recordings, four thousand pages of forensic accounting records, and the devastating, unyielding testimony of Dr. Marcus Vance had dismantled the Van Doren defense within days.

Julian Van Doren sat at the defense table in a standard orange correctional jumpsuit, his once-regal posture broken, his face gaunt and aged twenty years. His private equity empire had been completely liquidated under federal asset forfeiture laws to pay over two hundred million dollars in restitution to victims and defrauded investors.

Beside him sat Sloane Van Doren.

The silk gowns, the designer jewelry, the cathedral-length veils, and the porcelain smiles were gone forever. She wore coarse prison cotton, her unstyled hair pulled back into a simple elastic band, her wrists and ankles bound in heavy transport chains that clinked with every slight movement she made.

Judge Evelyn Vance (no relation to Marcus Vance), a jurist known for her uncompromising stance on corporate corruption, adjusted her glasses and looked down from the high bench at the defendants.

"In my thirty-two years on the federal bench," Judge Vance began, her voice ringing through the silent, solemn courtroom, "I have rarely encountered a criminal enterprise characterized by such absolute, unmitigated moral depravity."

The judge turned her cold gaze directly onto Sloane Van Doren.

"You, Sloane Van Doren, used your social pedigree, your intelligence, and your calculated charm not to build, but to destroy. You preyed upon a dying mother in her most vulnerable moments. You conspired to poison Clara Grant, you siphoned millions of dollars from an innocent child’s inheritance, and you plotted to consign a five-year-old girl to a lifetime of chemical and psychological imprisonment solely to satisfy your insatiable greed."

Sloane kept her head down, her lips trembling, her hands clutching the defense table as the tears of self-pity fell onto the polished wood.

"For the charges of Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO), Conspiracy to Commit Aggravated Manslaughter, Grand Wire Fraud, Aggravated Identity Theft, and Child Endangerment," Judge Vance declared, bringing her heavy gavel down with thunderous finality:

"You are hereby sentenced to forty-five years in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, to be served without the possibility of federal parole at the Federal Correctional Institution in Aliceville, Alabama."

Julian Van Doren received thirty-eight years.

Dr. Alistair Finch was sentenced to thirty-two years.

Dr. Marcus Vance, having cooperated extensively with the government, was sentenced to eighteen years in a secure medical correctional facility.

As the federal marshals stepped forward to escort Sloane Van Doren out of the courtroom toward the transport cells, she turned her head.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery was Graham Grant.

He was dressed in a sharp, elegant navy suit, sitting tall and composed. Beside him sat his sister Elena and his investigator, Jack Morrison.

Graham did not look at Sloane with anger. He did not look at her with hatred.

He looked at her with the absolute, profound indifference one reserves for a ghost that has long since lost its power to haunt.

Sloane was hauled through the heavy steel doors, the clinking of her iron chains echoing down the holding corridor until the heavy latch engaged with a final, definitive slam.

The monster was locked away forever.
