Chapter 11 - The Predator’s Last Gambit

The scene outside Courtroom 4B descended into total chaos.

As the federal agents moved in to execute the arrest warrants for Julian Van Doren and Dr. Marcus Vance, a sudden security alarm began to blare throughout the courthouse corridors. A fire alarm pull-station had been activated on the third floor, causing the automatic security gates to cycle and the emergency strobes to flash blinding white light against the marble walls.

In the panicked rush of fleeing spectators, bailiffs, and media crews, Sloane Van Doren slipped through a private service staircase behind the judge’s chambers.

"Graham!" Jack Morrison shouted over the blaring siren, pushing through the crowd with his radio to his ear. "Sloane bypassed the holding corridor! She had a secondary security pass for the judicial maintenance exit! She’s heading for the underground parking deck!"

"Elena, take Maisie into the U.S. Attorney’s secure conference room," Graham ordered instantly, handing his daughter to his sister.

"Daddy, be careful!" Maisie cried, clutching her rabbit.

"I will, baby. Auntie Elena has you. Stay inside."

Graham didn't wait for the elevators. He sprinted down the emergency stairwell, taking the concrete steps four at a time, his footsteps echoing against the metal railings.

He burst through the heavy fire doors into the subterranean parking garage beneath the courthouse.

The garage was dimly lit, filled with concrete pillars and the low hum of exhaust fans. Tires screeched in the distance.

At the far end of the VIP parking row, Sloane was frantically typing an access code into the driver’s side door of a high-performance silver Mercedes sedan. Beside her, sitting in the idling passenger seat, was a man Graham recognized from the Briarwood Crest intake dossier—the head of their private transport security team, armed and waiting.

"Sloane!" Graham’s voice cut through the concrete chamber like a crack of thunder.

Sloane spun around, her designer coat torn, her hair wild, her eyes wide with desperate, feral hatred. She pulled a small, silver .22 caliber automatic pistol from her designer handbag, leveling it directly at Graham’s chest with shaking hands.

"Stay back, Graham!" she screamed, her voice echoing violently off the low ceiling. "Stay back or I swear to God I will put a bullet through your heart right here!"

Graham didn't stop. He continued walking toward her with steady, measured, unstoppable strides.

"Put the gun down, Sloane," Graham said, his voice chillingly calm. "The garage exits are already blocked by federal tactical units. You aren't going anywhere."

"You ruined everything!" Sloane shrieked, her finger trembling against the trigger. "We had it all planned! You were supposed to be the grieving, grateful husband who signed whatever I put in front of you! You were supposed to let me manage that miserable, pathetic little girl! Julian and I were going to own the entire patent consortium, and you would have lived in luxury without having to think for the rest of your life!"

"You killed Clara," Graham said, stopping fifteen feet from the barrel of the gun, his eyes locking onto hers with absolute, fearless contempt. "You poisoned a dying mother in her own bed, and you tried to throw my five-year-old child into a cage."

"Clara was weak!" Sloane spat, tears of pure venom streaming down her face. "She was dying anyway! She was sitting on hundreds of millions of dollars that belonged to people who actually knew how to wield power! And that brat of hers... she looked at me with Clara’s eyes every single day! I couldn't even stand to be in the same room with her!"

"You’re right about one thing," Graham said softly.

Sloane blinked, her hand wavering. "What?"

"Maisie does have Clara’s eyes," Graham said. "And those eyes are going to watch you spend the next thirty years inside a federal penitentiary."

Before Sloane could react, the heavy tactical vehicle of the FBI SWAT team smashed through the underground security gate behind her Mercedes, blinding her with four thousand lumens of halogen takedown lights.

"FBI! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!"

The transport driver in the Mercedes threw his hands out the window immediately, screaming in surrender.

Sloane looked at the blinding lights, then back at Graham. Her hand shook violently, the pistol feeling impossibly heavy in her manicured fingers.

Graham didn't flinch. He didn't dive for cover. He stood tall, a wall of unyielding protective iron between the monster and his family.

With a broken, suffocated sob of pure defeat, Sloane’s fingers went limp.

The silver pistol clattered against the oil-stained concrete floor.

Two SWAT operators swarmed forward, forcing Sloane face-down against the hood of her luxury car, pulling her arms behind her back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists with a sharp, definitive click.

As they hauled her to her feet, her designer clothes ruined, her face pressed against the cold glass of the cruiser, she looked at Graham one last time.

Graham didn't say a single word.

He turned his back on her, walking toward the elevator, leaving the ruins of Sloane Van Doren behind him in the dark.
