Chapter 12 - The Exorcism of an Empire

By the third day, the blizzard finally broke, leaving behind a world of brilliant, blinding blue skies and pristine white snowdrifts.

The county plows finally cleared County Road B.

Marco entered the farmhouse with a secure satellite phone, handing it to Victor. "Sir. The board of directors in Chicago is in an absolute panic. Moretti’s syndicate has completely collapsed after the state police raided his warehouses based on the evidence we leaked. Sylvia Vance’s father has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The media is asking why you’ve been absent for seventy-two hours."

Victor took the phone, looked at the small kitchen where Nora was packing the diaper bag, and looked down at the device that represented his entire life's ambition.

He pressed the power button, held it down, and handed the dead phone back to Marco.

"Tell the board I am stepping down as Chief Executive Officer effective immediately," Victor said calmly.

Marco stared at him in utter disbelief. "Victor... you built this company from the ground up. You control forty percent of the logistics infrastructure in the Midwest."

"And it nearly cost me the only three lives that matter," Victor replied without a single hint of hesitation. "Appoint Julian as acting CEO. Liquidate my commercial holdings. Transfer all voting shares into an irrevocable blind trust for Leo and Mia, with Nora as the sole trustee."

Marco looked into Victor’s eyes, saw the absolute, unbreakable finality in them, and slowly bowed his head. "Understood, sir."

Victor walked back into the kitchen.

Caleb and Martha were standing by the door, smiling warmly as Nora bundled Mia into her snowsuit.

"Where will you go, Nora?" Victor asked softly, standing ten feet away, keeping his promise to give her space.

Nora looked around the humble farmhouse that had saved her children’s lives.

"I bought a small cottage on the coast of Maine two months ago," Nora said quietly. "Near Bar Harbor. It’s quiet. There are no high-rises. There are no board meetings. There are no women like Sylvia Vance. Just clean sea air for Leo’s lungs."

Victor swallowed hard, nodding slowly. "It sounds perfect for them."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a simple manila envelope, placing it gently on the wooden table.

"What is that?" Nora asked, her eyes narrowing suspiciously.

"The deed to the Maine property was in a holding company," Victor explained. "I had my lawyers clear the title this morning so it is registered entirely in your maiden name. Inside is the full medical file Dr. Jenkins prepared, along with contact information for the top pediatric pulmonary clinic in Boston. And the divorce papers, signed by me. Unconditional. You keep everything."

Nora stared at the envelope. She didn't pick it up.

"And you?" she asked, her voice barely audible. "What will you do, Victor?"

Victor looked out the window at the endless expanse of blue sky over the snowy fields.

"I’m buying the sixty acres of farmland adjacent to this property from Caleb," Victor said with a faint, self-deprecating smile. "I’m going to learn how to fix tractors. And I’m going to spend the rest of my life making sure that if my children ever ask who their father was... they won't have to hear that he was a monster."
