Chapter 6 - Burning Down the City: Chicago’s King Loses His Crown to Grief

In Chicago, the Rinaldi empire was crumbling from the top down, not because of rivals, but because its master had stopped caring about power.
Victor had not slept in fourteen days. Empty coffee cups and crumpled satellite maps littered his massive office desk. His tailored suits hung loosely on his frame; he had lost fifteen pounds, his cheekbones sharp, his eyes sunken and shadowed by dark purple bruises of guilt.
He had fired half his executive board. He had dismantled three of his own logistics subsidiaries after discovering minor discrepancies that distracted from the search. He didn't care about the sixty-million-dollar merger waiting for his signature.
"Any word from the borders?" Victor asked, his voice rasping from chain-smoking.
Marco, his most trusted enforcer, shook his head somberly. "Nothing in Canada. Nothing in Mexico. We checked every private pediatric specialist from New York to Miami. Victor... she isn't using credit cards. She isn't using cell towers. She’s living like a ghost. If she doesn't surface soon..."
Marco trailed off, afraid to voice the thought haunting all of them.
"Say it," Victor commanded, his eyes burning into Marco.
"Leo had grade-two bronchopulmonary dysplasia when they left," Marco said quietly. "Without clinical-grade oxygen refills every two weeks... Victor, those kids might not have survived the trip."
The words hit Victor like a physical blow to the chest. He stumbled back against the window, his breath hitching. The thought of his son—his tiny boy who used to grip Victor's pinky finger with his entire hand—dying in the back of some freezing car because his father was a lying, arrogant coward... it tore through his soul like jagged glass.
He fell to his knees in the middle of his grand office, clutching his chest.
"Please," Victor choked out, a sound Marco had never heard from him in twenty years of service. A sound of a broken man weeping in the dark. "Please, God... take everything. Take the money. Take the business. Take my life. Just let my babies breathe. Let Nora be safe."
Suddenly, the red emergency monitor on Dante’s console lit up with a high-pitched digital chime.
Dante lunged for the keyboard, his fingers flying across the keys. "Victor! We have a hit! A Level-1 pediatric respiratory alert just popped on the Northeast Medical Exchange!"
Victor scrambled to his feet, knocking his chair over. "Where?!"
"Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport, Maine. A female patient using a forged Massachusetts ID just admitted an eight-week-old infant with severe RSV and cyanosis. The blood panel matches Leo’s exact biometric markers!"
Victor’s heart hammered against his ribs like a war drum. "Get the jet ready. Now!"

"The weather in Maine is bad, boss, another coastal gale—"
"I don't care if the wings tear off!" Victor roared, grabbing his coat. "Get me to Maine in two hours, or I’ll fly the plane myself!"
