Chapter 4 - The Mistress at the Door and the Truth Behind the Perfume

By 8:00 A.M., the industrial warehouse on the south side of Chicago was freezing cold. Snow piled against the corrugated metal walls, but inside, the air was thick with tension so sharp it could cut glass.
Sylvia walked in wearing a pristine white mink coat, her high heels clicking arrogantly against the concrete floor. She expected Victor to sweep her into his arms, to apologize for running out on her early that morning.
Instead, she found Victor sitting on a steel chair in the center of the vast, empty bay. Behind him stood six armed guards with stone-cold faces. The fire in the oil drum beside him cast flickering, demonic shadows across his hollow, pale face.
"Victor, darling?" Sylvia smiled, though her voice faltered as she saw the sheer brutality in his eyes. "What is this place? Why did your men bring me here in the middle of a blizzard? My driver said it was an emergency."
Victor didn't stand up. He didn't look at her body, which he had so foolishly craved hours before. All he saw was the architect of his own destruction.
"Where did you get the photos, Sylvia?" Victor asked. His voice was terrifyingly calm, devoid of all emotion.
Sylvia blinked, the color draining from her cheeks. "Photos? What photos? Victor, I don't know what—"
"The photos sent to my wife yesterday," Victor interrupted, leaning forward. "The ones showing our private weekends in Miami. The ones showing the diamond necklace I bought you. And the pregnancy test."
Sylvia swallowed hard, clutching her mink coat tighter around herself. She tried to muster her usual coquettish pout. "Oh, that? Victor, be serious! Nora was dragging you down! She’s boring, she’s sick, and those broken little babies were ruining your life! You haven't been happy in months! I did what you were too polite to do. I gave her the push she needed to walk away!"
The silence that followed was deafening.
Victor stood up. Slowly. Towering over her, he closed the distance until Sylvia had to crane her neck to look into his eyes. What she saw there wasn't the passionate lover from last night—it was the Chicago reaper, the man who had eliminated rival syndicates without blinking.
"Broken little babies?" Victor whispered.
Sylvia stepped back, her heels slipping on the slick floor. "Victor... I'm pregnant with your real heir. A healthy baby. Not like those two who need machines just to—"
"You are not pregnant," Victor said coldly, pulling a manila folder from his inner pocket and throwing it at her feet. Medical records spilled across the dirty floor. "I had my physicians pull your clinic records two hours ago. You had a tubal ligation four years ago in Switzerland. The pregnancy test was fake. The photos were taken by a private investigator you hired to stalk me."
Sylvia’s mouth dropped open. The carefully crafted web of lies evaporated in an instant.
"You wanted my name," Victor said, his voice dropping an octave into pure malice. "You wanted my penthouse. You thought if you broke my wife, I would elevate you to her place."
"Victor, please! I love you! I did it for us!" Sylvia shrieked, falling to her knees on the filthy concrete. "She left on her own! She didn't even fight for you! She's nothing!"
"She is my wife," Victor growled, bending down so his face was inches from hers. "She carried my children while bleeding in a hospital bed for three months. She protected them while I was blind, stupid, and disgusting enough to touch trash like you."
He straightened up and turned his back on her.
"Victor! What are you going to do to me?!" she screamed, tears finally ruining her immaculate makeup.
"Dante," Victor said without looking back. "Strip her of every asset she owns. The apartment, the cars, the bank accounts I funded. Revoke her passport. Put her on every blacklist from New York to London. If she ever steps foot within fifty miles of my family again, bury her."

Victor walked out into the freezing storm, leaving Sylvia screaming in the dark. But as he climbed into his armored SUV, the hollow emptiness in his chest only expanded. He had destroyed the viper, but the poison had already worked.
His wife was out there in the sub-zero wild, running from him as if he were the devil himself. And the worst part was—he knew she was right.
