Chapter 8 - Juliette’s Midnight Counterattack: The Arsonist’s Enforcer Comes to Finish the Job

Before the state troopers could snap the steel cuffs around Juliette’s wrists, a sudden, violent commotion erupted at the rear of the ballroom.

A loud crack—like the sound of a small explosive charge—echoed from the electrical control room near the foyer. Instantly, the Saint Aurelia Ballroom plunged into pitch-black darkness. The massive crystal chandeliers went dead, and the only illumination came from the emergency exit signs glowing blood-red above the heavy doors.

Screams erupted instantly. Four hundred guests panicked, knocking over chairs, trampling floral arrangements, and rushing toward the exits in a blind stampede.

"Caroline! Down!" Marcus yelled, his voice cutting through the bedlam.

A heavy hand grabbed my shoulder, forcing me down behind the solid marble communion table just as a silenced gunshot whistled through the darkness, shattering the glass podium where Marcus had been standing seconds earlier.

Juliette hadn't come to this wedding unprepared. She had always known that secrets have a way of crawling out of the dark, and she had kept her hired muscle on standby.

"Clear the altar!" Marcus barked into his tactical radio. "We have an active shooter! Code Red!"

Through the chaotic strobe of guests' mobile phones and emergency lights, I saw a tall, broad-shouldered man in a caterer’s uniform moving swiftly up the side aisle. In his hand was a suppressed automatic pistol.

I recognized the cold, dead eyes instantly.

It was Victor Vance—no relation to Marcus—a former mercenary and private enforcer who had been on Juliette’s payroll for half a decade. Victor was the man who had chained the fire escape at Blackwood Manor. He was the man who had poured the sixty gallons of gasoline into the cellar.

"Juliette, move!" Victor barked, grabbing my sister by her torn bridal veil and hauling her to her feet.

"Kill her, Victor!" Juliette screamed, pointing her trembling finger toward the marble altar where I was crouched. "Kill Caroline! If she dies today, the Swiss will cannot be executed in person! Kill her now!"

Victor didn't hesitate. He raised his weapon and advanced toward the altar, firing two controlled rounds into the wooden paneling inches above my head, showering my hair with splinters.

I didn't cower. Five years of agony, skin grafts, and operating rooms had burned the fear out of my nervous system. I had already survived his fire; I wasn't going to let his bullets finish the job.

As Victor rounded the corner of the marble table, I gripped the heavy brass candelabra that had fallen from the altar. With every ounce of strength in my reconstructed arms, I swung the solid metal base straight into Victor’s knee.

The sickening crunch of bone echoed over the screams of the crowd. Victor roared in agony, his leg buckling beneath him as he collapsed onto the marble floor, his pistol skittering across the smooth tiles.

Marcus Vance lunged from the shadows, tackling the massive enforcer to the ground, driving his elbow into Victor’s throat and pinning his gun arm against the stone floor.

"Don't move, Victor!" Marcus growled, pressing his service weapon firmly against the back of the enforcer's neck. "Give me a reason! Give me one damn reason to pull this trigger after what you did to my career and this girl!"

Victor gasped for breath, his eyes bulging as the steel pressed into his skull. He let out a choked groan and went limp, knowing the game was finished.

Across the darkened room, the backup emergency generators kicked in with a deep mechanical groan. The auxiliary lights flickered to life, illuminating the wrecked ballroom in harsh, white fluorescent light.

Juliette was halfway to the side service exit, her white dress stained with dirt and blood from her torn feet, dragging the heavy hem behind her.

She reached for the brass crash bar of the exit door, her face contorted in desperate panic.

The door swung open—not to freedom, but into the chest of five armed FBI tactical agents wearing body armor, their assault rifles raised and leveled directly at her forehead.

"FBI! Don't move!" the lead agent shouted. "Juliette Mercer, step back and put your hands on your head!"

May you like

Juliette froze. Her eyes darted wildly from the federal agents to the wrecked altar, to the pinned enforcer, and finally to me, standing tall amidst the ruins of her wedding.

Her knees gave out. She slumped against the emergency doorframe, her bridal tiara falling from her hair and clattering onto the concrete loading dock.
