Chapter 5: Sunbreak

Two months later, the Memphis summer had arrived in full force, thick and heavy with humidity.

My small backyard was alive with the sound of laughter. Ruby was running through the lawn sprinkler, her bare feet kicking up droplets of water that caught the afternoon light. Her cheeks were flush with natural color, her movements energetic and free. The lethargy that had shadowed her for months was entirely gone.

Daniel sat on the porch step beside me, watching her with a quiet, peaceful smile.

The legal battle had been brutal, but Vanessa’s lawyers had quickly realized the video evidence was insurmountable. She had agreed to a plea deal that involved intensive psychological evaluation, supervised probation, and a strict no-contact order for the foreseeable future.

"She asked me today if we could go fishing this weekend," Daniel said, turning to me. "I told her I didn't know the first thing about finding a good spot around here."

I smiled, taking a sip of my iced tea. "Well, I happen to know a quiet pond just past the county line. The bluegill are practically jumping out of the water this time of year."

Ruby ran up to the porch, dripping wet, and threw her arms around my neck. She smelled like summer, fresh water, and clean grass.

"Can Grace come fishing too, Grandpa?" she asked, her eyes bright and clear.

"Only if she wears a life jacket," I laughed, pulling her close.

For the first time in a very long time, the weight in my chest didn't feel like guilt. It felt like a promise kept.
