Chapter 3: Under Safe Wings

The transition from the clinic to my pickup truck was a blur of flashing blue lights, whispered statements, and the quiet click of handcuffs. Vanessa was escorted out the back entrance to avoid a scene in the lobby, but her furious protests echoed down the corridor long after she was gone.

I signed the emergency protective paperwork Dr. Allen and the responding officers provided. Because Daniel was cooperating fully and had provided the evidence, the state granted temporary emergency custody to me until Daniel could arrive.

By the time I buckled Ruby into the front seat of my truck, the Memphis sky was turning a bruised purple. She looked so small against the worn leather seat, her tiny hand still locked around the elephant’s ear.

"Grandpa?" she whispered as we pulled out of the parking lot. "Are we going home?"

"Not to the big house tonight, sweetheart," I said, keeping my voice as gentle as possible. "We’re going to my place. We’re going to have some supper, and your dad is flying in as fast as he can."

"Is Mommy mad at me?"

The question cut straight through me, sharper than any accusation Vanessa could have thrown. I reached over and squeezed her small shoulder.

"No, Ruby. Mommy is... Mommy has some things she needs to fix. You did nothing wrong. You were very brave to tell me."

She nodded slowly, her eyelids already drooping again from the lingering effects of the drug. "The elephant helped," she mumbled. "Grace told me to tell you."

I kept my eyes on the road, blink-filtering the tears that threatened to blur the red tail lights ahead of us. For years, I had kept my distance from my son’s family, feeling like an old ranch hand who didn't belong in their wealthy, suburban world. I had let my own insecurities keep me away. But looking at the sleeping child beside me, I knew those days of standing on the sidelines were over.
