Chapter 8 - The Poisoned Almond Tart and the Traitor in the Pantry

Following the ambush on the mountain pass, Villa Moretti became a fortress under total lockdown.

Marco had survived the crash with only a broken collarbone and bruised ribs, and Luca had doubled the guard rotations on every gate. The five captured mercenaries had been handed over to loyal precinct captains in Como; under interrogation, they confirmed what we already knew: Dante Rossi had paid them five hundred thousand euros to ensure Don Moretti never reached Milan alive.

By Friday afternoon, twenty-four hours before the Gala, the estate was bustling with caterers and tailors preparing the formal entourage.

I spent the afternoon where I felt safest: the estate's pastry kitchen.

If we were going to Milan to face the viper's nest, I needed to keep my mind sharp and my hands busy. I was testing a recipe for traditional Sicilian frangipane—delicate almond tarts topped with glazed cherries and powdered sugar—when Giancarlo, one of the newer kitchen stewards hired three weeks before my arrival, entered carrying a fresh crate of imported almond extract and baking spices.

"From the Milanese market, Donna Sophia," Giancarlo said, bowing his head respectfully as he set the wooden crate on the counter. "Signor Dante sent them as a peace offering following the misunderstanding earlier this week."

My internal alarms flared instantly. Dante sending baking ingredients?

"How thoughtful," I said evenly, keeping my face completely neutral. "Please unpack them on the rear table, Giancarlo."

"Right away, Signora."

The moment the young steward left the kitchen, I walked over to the wooden crate.

Sitting in the center was a vintage amber glass bottle labeled Pure Sicilian Bitter Almond Essence.

I carefully unstoppered the bottle, bringing it close to my nose without inhaling directly, using the professional wafting technique my father had taught me when I was twelve years old.

The scent of sweet almond was overpowering. But beneath the rich, nutty aroma lingered the faint, unmistakable acrid sharpness of metallic sulfur and crushed peach pits.

Cyanide.

A lethal synthetic dose of potassium cyanide, disguised perfectly within the natural scent profile of bitter almond extract.

A cold rage washed over me. Dante hadn't just tried to ambush us on the road; he had planted an assassination attempt inside my own craft, intending for me to unknowingly poison my own husband with his favorite dessert.

"Sophia?"

Luca stepped into the kitchen, dressed in dark trousers and a crisp blue shirt, looking over a folder of security dossiers. He smiled when he saw the row of golden, freshly baked tarts cooling on the marble rack.

"Something smells incredible," Luca said, stepping toward the counter and reaching out a hand to take one of the unglazed tarts.

"Stop!" I commanded sharply.

Luca froze, his hand hovering an inch from the pastry. He looked up, his brow furrowing in confusion. "What is it?"

I picked up the amber bottle with a clean towel, holding it up to the light.

"Giancarlo brought this ten minutes ago, claiming it was a gift from Dante," I said, my voice trembling with controlled fury. "It is laced with enough concentrated cyanide to kill five grown men in under two minutes."

Luca’s expression instantly turned into a mask of pure, murderous stone. The warmth in his eyes died, replaced by the lethal frost of a syndicate boss whose sanctuary had been violated.

He didn't yell. He didn't smash anything. He simply pulled his communicator from his pocket and pressed speed dial.

"Marco," Luca said in a flat, terrifying voice. "Bring Giancarlo to the wine cellar. Now."

Ten minutes later, in the soundproofed depths of the villa’s lower cellar, the terrified steward broke into hysterical tears before Luca could even lay a finger on him. Giancarlo confessed that Dante’s men had kidnapped his younger brother in Milan, threatening to execute the boy unless Giancarlo swapped the kitchen’s vanilla extract with the poisoned almond essence.

Luca stood over the trembling young man, his towering frame casting a terrifying shadow across the stone cellar.

"Where is your brother being held?" Luca asked quietly.

"A... an auto repair shop near San Siro stadium, Don Luca! I swear on my mother's soul, I didn't want to do it! They were going to kill him!"

Luca turned to Marco. "Take six men. Raid the auto shop in San Siro, retrieve the boy safely, and place Giancarlo's entire family under twenty-four-hour armed guard in our Swiss safehouse."

Giancarlo dropped to his knees, sobbing and kissing Luca’s boots. "Thank you, Don Luca! Thank you! I don't deserve your mercy!"

"You don't," Luca said coldly, stepping back. "You brought poison into my wife's kitchen. If she had not caught your amateur mistake, I would have fed you that entire bottle. Thank your Donna that she values human life more than I do."

Luca turned and walked back up the stone stairs, his hand finding mine in the corridor. He pulled me into his side, wrapping his massive arm around my shoulders, pressing a fierce, lingering kiss against the top of my head.

"Tomorrow night, Sophia," Luca whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute resolve, "we end Dante Rossi once and for all."
