Chapter 14 - Blood on the Marble and the Final Reckoning

At precisely 11:58 PM, two minutes before the midnight deadline, the grand double doors of the Sala delle Colonne in Milan burst open for the second time that night.

The music died instantly. The four hundred elite members of the European syndicate froze in utter shock.

Luca strode into the ballroom.

He was bruised, his white shirt stained with blood and soot, but he carried himself with the absolute, undisputed majesty of an unyielding king. Dragged behind him by the collar of his ruined burgundy suit was a broken, handcuffed Dante Rossi.

Beside Luca, walking tall and proud, holding her husband's arm with unwavering strength, was me.

Luca tossed Dante onto the polished marble floor at the feet of Don Antonio Falcone and the High Commission.

The entire ballroom erupted into gasps and murmurs of horror.

Luca stepped forward, reaching inside his vest and tossing an audio recorder and a stack of encrypted bank records onto the silver table in front of the elders.

"Dante Rossi stands accused of high treason," Luca’s deep voice boomed through the grand hall, silencing every breath. "Attempted assassination, poisoning, the murder of my father six years ago, and the abduction of the Donna of Lombardy."

Falcone pressed play on the recorder. Dante’s terrified confession in the warehouse echoed clearly across the crystal chandeliers, detailing every bribe, every threat, and the full extent of his six-year conspiracy to destroy Luca.

Falcone stood up, his face grim with absolute disgust. He looked down at Dante, then looked at the surrounding Commission elders, who gave unanimous, solemn nods.

"Dante Rossi," Falcone announced with the weight of ancient law, "you are stripped of your name, your assets, and your rank. You will spend the remainder of your days in the maximum-security federal penitentiary in Palermo. Take him away."

Armed Commission guards dragged Dante screaming from the ballroom, his pathetic cries fading into the night.

Falcone then turned to Luca.

He raised his gold goblet high into the air.

"To Don Luca Salvatore Moretti! Sole, undisputed Don of Lombardy and the northern fleets!"

Four hundred guests raised their glasses in unison, their voices echoing off the marble pillars:

"To Don Moretti! To Donna Sophia!"

Luca turned to me in the center of the grand hall.

In front of the entire Italian aristocracy, in front of the world that had once judged and rejected him, the giant of Lake Como dropped to one knee before his American bride.

He took my flour-calloused hand in his massive, scarred palms, kissing my knuckles with reverent devotion.

"I gave you a war, Sophia," Luca spoke, his voice ringing with pure love. "Now let me give you peace."

May you like

Tears of pure joy spilled down my cheeks as I smiled down at my husband.

"Only if you let me bake our anniversary cake, Don Moretti."
