Chapter 19 - BRETT CAME TO OPAL AFTER CLOSING

Brett arrived at 11:38 p.m.
No invitation.
But he waited outside.
Did not enter.
Audrey saw him through the glass.
He pointed toward the door.
Permission.
She considered.
Then unlocked it.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
“That’s suspicious.”
He smiled faintly.
“I wanted to give you something.”
Audrey stared.
“If it’s jewelry, leave.”
He actually laughed.
“No.”
He handed her a cardboard box.
Inside:
Old notebooks.
Restaurant photos.
Menus.
Early vendor contracts.
A broken wooden recipe stand.
Audrey touched it.
She recognized everything.
“Where did you get these?”
“Storage.”
“Your storage?”
“Yes.”
Her face hardened.
“You had these?”
“I forgot.”
She stared.
Brett corrected himself.
“I forgot what they meant.”
Better.
He continued:
“When we separated, I packed anything that felt connected to the first restaurant.”
“Why?”
“I couldn’t look at it.”
Audrey lifted a menu.
Her handwriting.
Brett’s coffee stain.
Life before branding.
Before betrayal.
He whispered:
“These are yours.”
Audrey looked up.
“No.”
He frowned.
“Some are yours.”
She handed him one photograph.
Their first opening night.
Both of them standing beneath a crooked sign.
Young.
Terrified.
Equal.
“This is ours.”
Brett stared.
Audrey continued:
“You don’t have to erase yourself to stop erasing me.”
His eyes filled.
That landed.
For years, their correction process had risked becoming another distortion.
Brett did build part of Holloway House.
He did charm lenders.
Find investors.
Sell the vision.
Work nights.
Carry tables.
Wash dishes.
Love the dream.
Then success taught him to confuse contribution with ownership.
But truth did not require replacing one false story with another.
Brett nodded.
“Thank you.”
Audrey closed the box.
“Don’t make me regret saying that.”
“Wouldn’t dream of it.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“History suggests otherwise.”
Fair.
---
Before he left, Brett stopped.
“Micah told me he’s applying to culinary programs.”
Audrey groaned.
“He told you?”
“He told everyone except you?”
“Apparently.”
Brett smiled.
“You’re scary.”
“I gave birth to him.”
“I know.”
Silence.
Then Audrey said:
“Don’t push him toward Holloway House.”
“I won’t.”
“Or away from it.”
“I won’t.”
“Let him choose.”
Brett nodded.
That word again.
Choice.
May you like
Maybe all their healing eventually reduced to that.
