Chapter 14 - SIERRA RETURNED WITH ONE EMAIL

Sierra Vaughn emailed Audrey at 6:04 on a Sunday morning.
I have something you need to see.
Audrey stared.
She had not spoken to Sierra in nearly two years.
She forwarded the email to Naomi.
Naomi responded:
Do not reply until I call you.
Naturally.
Twenty minutes later:
“Meet through counsel.”
So they did.
Same office.
Different women.
Sierra looked older.
Not dramatically.
Just less polished.
More real.
She worked for a nonprofit arts organization now.
Audrey had heard that somewhere.
Sierra placed one printed email on the table.
“Brett sent this to North Meridian’s managing partner before the sale.”
Audrey read.
Her stomach tightened.
Brett had written:
Certain assets may face claims from my former spouse, but those claims are emotionally motivated and commercially weak.
Audrey stopped.
Naomi’s face hardened.
Sierra continued:
“He copied me because I was still technically a manager of Holloway Legacy.”
“Why didn’t you disclose this earlier?”
“I didn’t understand what he later did with the company.”
“Why now?”
“Because I saw the lawsuit threat.”
Audrey stared.
Sierra looked down.
“I helped create Holloway Legacy.”
“Yes.”
“I knew the original plan was supposed to move assets away from you.”
“Yes.”
“I told myself it was business.”
“Yes.”
Each yes landed.
Then Sierra said:
“I’m tired of pretending that because Brett lied to me too, I wasn’t helping him lie to you first.”
There.
Audrey felt some of the old anger loosen.
Not disappear.
Shift.
Sierra slid the email forward.
“Use it.”
Naomi asked:
“Do you have the original?”
“Yes.”
“Preserved?”
“Yes.”
“Your attorney knows?”
“Yes.”
Good.
Adults.
Processes.
Records.
---
Audrey asked:
“Why did you really wear the brooch that night?”
Sierra looked up.
The question had survived two years.
“I wanted you to see.”
Audrey stopped breathing.
Sierra’s eyes filled.
“Brett told me he was going to announce our relationship soon. Then he kept delaying.”
“So you wore my grandmother’s jewelry.”
“Yes.”
“To force it?”
“Yes.”
Audrey looked away.
Cruel.
Pathetic.
Human.
Sierra whispered:
“I wanted to win.”
Audrey laughed sadly.
“So did Brett.”
“Yes.”
“And neither of you understood there was nothing to win.”
Sierra nodded.
“I know that now.”
Audrey believed her.
Again, belief did not require friendship.
But truth mattered.
---
The email destroyed North Meridian’s favorite argument.
They had known claims existed.
They bought anyway.
At a discount reflecting risk.
Then tried to pretend the risk appeared later.
Discovery exposed their own valuation memo:
Potential leverage value exceeds likely adjudicated IP value.
Naomi read the line twice.
Then smiled.
“They bought leverage.”
Audrey nodded.
May you like
“Let’s sell them disappointment.”
