Chapter 5 - THE UNSEALED WILL

My hands were shaking as I took the envelope back from Alessandro.
The paper was thick linen, brittle from six years of hiding.
The dried wax seal on the back bore an embossed stamp of an anchor crossed with a quill.
My father’s personal mark.
Alessandro pulled a small silver pocketknife from his trousers.
He slit the top edge of the envelope with surgical care, then handed it back to me.
I pulled out three folded sheets of heavy vellum.
And a small, tarnished silver key.
The key was tiny, no longer than my thumb, its teeth cut in intricate, jagged patterns like a puzzle.
I opened the first sheet.
My father’s handwriting stared back at me, bold, slanted, and unmistakably alive on the page:
My dearest Sophia,
If you are reading this, I am dead, and the men who called themselves my brothers have torn our family apart.
Do not weep for me, my brave little star.
I knew the price of defying the Five Families.
Ten years ago, I discovered that Dominic Vance and Silvio Caruso were using our international shipping lines to smuggle human cargo through the eastern seaboard.
Young women.
Children.
Sold like livestock in the dark.
A sharp, nauseating gasp tore from my throat.
I dropped my head, the room spinning around me.
Alessandro’s hand clamped down firmly on my shoulder, steadying me against the horror.
"Keep reading, Sophia," Alessandro said softly.
His voice was thick with an ancient, burning hatred.
I forced my eyes back to the page:
I spent four years compiling the evidence.
Every bank transfer.
Every port official on their payroll.
Every name of every victim.
I encrypted the digital files into a decentralized offshore vault in Zurich.
Account Name: THE AURELIA ARCHIVE.
The encryption key requires two physical components:
The silver key inside this envelope.
And the master seal worn by the Don of the Caruso family.
I could not trust the police.
I could not trust the federal courts.
They are all bought.
There was only one man in Chicago who possessed both the power to protect you and the honor to destroy this syndicate from within.
Alessandro Caruso.
He was twenty-four when I came to him.
He had just returned from military service abroad, unaware of the rot his uncle Silvio had cultivated in his family's empire.
I asked Alessandro to marry you.
Not for money.
Not for an alliance.
Because under the ancient bylaws of the Commission, a Don’s lawful wife cannot be touched, questioned, or executed without a unanimous council trial.
Her life is bound to his.
Her protection is absolute.
Alessandro swore on his mother’s grave that he would guard you with his life until you were safe to claim the Archive.
If you are with him now, trust him.
He is not your jailer, Sophia.
He is your shield.
Destroy them.
With all my love,
Marcus Chen.
A tear fell from my chin, splashing onto my father’s faded signature.
The vellum paper blurred before my eyes.
The wedding four years ago.
The cold cathedral in Chicago.
Alessandro standing beside me in that dark suit, looking like he would rather die than stand at the altar.
He hadn't been angry with me.
He had been standing between me and the firing squad.
He had taken a target onto his own chest to save a stranger’s eighteen-year-old daughter.
I slowly lifted my head.
Alessandro was watching me.
His silver eyes were wide, stripped of all arrogance, filled with a raw, agonizing vulnerability.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I choked out, my voice cracking down the middle.
"Four years, Alessandro!"
"I thought you hated me!"
"I thought you threw me to Aunt Marie because I was a burden!"
Alessandro dropped to both knees before the cot.
He reached out.
His large, calloused hands took my bandaged left hand and my trembling right hand into his own.
He brought them to his chest, pressing them flat over his beating heart.
"Four years ago, on our wedding night, my car was ambushed on Route 4," Alessandro confessed.
His voice was hoarse, shaking with an emotion he had buried in the dark for forty-eight months.
"Three bullets through the chest."
"One grazed my spine."
"I was in a medically induced coma for seven months in Switzerland."
My breath caught in my throat.
"A coma...?"
"While I was unconscious, Silvio told your aunt that I had arranged the hit myself to eliminate you," Alessandro said, a tear finally escaping his lashes, cutting through the soot on his cheek.
"Marie took two million dollars from Silvio to take you away."
"She hid you in Bellhaven under a false name."
"By the time I woke up, by the time I could walk again, you had vanished into thin air."
He leaned forward, pressing his forehead against my knees.
"I tore this country apart looking for you, Sophia."
"I raided twenty-two safe houses."
"I broke forty men’s hands in basement interrogations."
"And when I finally found you..."
His voice broke.
A ragged, choking sob shook his broad frame.
"You were cleaning coffee off a linoleum floor, bleeding for seventy-five dollars a week."
"I failed your father."
"And I failed you."
I looked down at the most feared mafia boss in Chicago.
The man who had just dismantled an assault team with an empty gun.
Kneeling on the floor of a bunker, weeping against my knees.
My good hand slid from his chest.
I cupped the side of his scarred jaw, tilting his face upward until his silver eyes met mine.
"You didn't fail me, Alessandro," I whispered through my own tears.
"You took a bullet for me at the bakery today."
"You came back."
He looked at me, his gaze searching my face as if searching for his own salvation.
He reached into his pocket.
He pulled out the heavy gold signet ring of the Caruso family.
The master seal.
The anchor crossed with the iron crown.
He took the small silver key from my father’s envelope.
The key fit into a hidden, micro-recess on the back of the gold signet ring.
Click.
The two metals fused together, completing the circuit of an internal USB transmitter embedded in the gold.
A tiny green light pulsed within the crown.
The Aurelia Archive was unlocked.
Thirty billion dollars in illicit assets.
The complete records of every corrupt senator, judge, and cartel boss on the continent.
Dante stepped to the vault door, his radio crackling with urgent static.
"Boss! Satellite intercept from the city!"
Alessandro stood up, his posture instantly snapping back into that of an apex predator, though his hand remained firmly laced through mine.
"Speak, Dante."
"Silvio has just called an emergency summit of the Five Families at the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago," Dante said, his voice grim.
"Ten o'clock tonight."
"He announced that you were killed in the estate breach."
"And he is naming himself the Supreme Don of the Midwest."
Alessandro looked down at the glowing signet ring on his pinky.
A slow, terrifying, beautiful smile spread across his lips.
"Tell the drivers to prep the armored convoy, Dante."
"We're going to a funeral."
"Whose funeral, boss?"
May you like
Alessandro looked at me, his silver eyes blazing with the light of an empire about to be reclaimed.
"My uncle's."
