Chapter 4 - BLOOD ON THE MARBLE

The screech of tearing metal echoed across the estate grounds.

Through the tall, leaded-glass windows of the library, high-intensity halogen floodlights cut through the rain.

Gunfire erupted outside.

Tat-tat-tat-tat-tat.

Heavy assault rifles chewing through the stone balustrades.

Dr. Rosini dropped his medical kit, diving behind the mahogany desk.

Alessandro did not flinch.

He moved with the terrifying, supernatural speed of a man born to violence.

He swept me off the sofa in one motion.

He carried me into the small private study behind the library.

He pushed back a floor-to-ceiling oak bookshelf, revealing a heavy steel-reinforced vault door set into the masonry.

A panic room.

He pulled the heavy door open.

Inside, battery-operated emergency LED lights bathed a small room in soft amber glow.

There was a cot, medical supplies, and racks of tactical firearms.

Alessandro set me down gently on the edge of the cot.

"Stay inside, Sophia," he commanded.

He reached for the heavy steel door handle.

I grabbed his sleeve with my right hand.

My fingers dug through the fine wool of his jacket, refusing to let go.

"Alessandro, don't leave me!"

My voice was raw, stripped of all pride.

"They have four vehicles!"

"There are too many of them!"

Alessandro paused.

He looked down at my hand gripping his arm.

He knelt in front of the cot, bringing his face level with mine.

His expression was dead calm.

Completely devoid of fear.

"Four years ago, I let my uncle convince me that leaving you in Bellhaven was the only way to keep you alive," Alessandro said softly.

He raised his hand and cupped my cheek, his thumb brushing away a fresh tear.

"I listened to old men who valued politics over blood."

"I spent four years waking up in an empty bed, wondering if you were freezing."

"Wondering if you were hungry."

He leaned forward and pressed his lips firmly against my forehead.

A kiss that tasted of iron, rain, and ancient devotion.

"I will never leave you behind again, Sophia."

"No one walks into my home and touches what is mine."

He pulled his arm from my grip.

He stepped out into the study and pulled the heavy steel door shut.

The electronic deadbolts slid into place with a terrifying, pressurized chunk.

I was sealed inside.

The silence in the vault was suffocating.

I scrambled across the floor on my knees, pressing my ear against the cold steel door.

Through the three inches of hardened metal, the battle sounded like rolling thunder.

BOOM.

A grenade detonated in the grand foyer.

The stone walls vibrated.

Automatic gunfire hammered through the library.

Screams.

The sound of shattering wood and falling plaster.

And cutting through the chaos was the distinctive, rhythmic crack-crack-crack of Alessandro’s Kimber .45.

He wasn't retreating.

He was advancing.

Ten minutes passed.

Every second felt like an eternity carved into my ribs.

My palm throbbed with a dull, sickening pulse.

I held my father’s envelope tight against my chest, praying to whatever god watched over broken marriages.

Please let him live.

Please let him walk back through that door.

The gunfire began to thin.

Single shots.

Then silence.

A heavy, ringing silence that settled over the estate like a shroud.

I held my breath.

Footsteps approached the outer study.

Slow.

Heavy.

Dragging slightly on the hardwood floor.

My heart hammered against my teeth.

The electronic lock on the vault door chirped.

Beep. Beep. Click.

The heavy steel door swung outward on oiled hinges.

I shrank back against the cot, clutching the envelope like a weapon.

A tall figure stood framed in the doorway.

Alessandro.

His suit jacket was gone.

His white shirt was soaked in crimson—not mine, but the dark, arterial blood of his enemies.

A jagged shrapnel tear ran across his left bicep, flesh weeping red, but his stance was unbroken.

In his right hand, he held his smoking firearm, slide locked back.

Behind him, Dante stood in the ruined library, wiping soot from his forehead with a tactical glove.

The foyer beyond was littered with debris, shattered marble, and spent brass casings.

Alessandro looked at me.

His silver eyes were dilated, dark with the remnants of combat adrenaline.

He stepped into the vault.

He dropped his empty gun onto the metal table.

He walked toward the cot and sank to his knees before me, resting his forehead against my knees.

His breathing was heavy, ragged, shaking his massive shoulders.

"Sophia," he whispered into the fabric of my trousers.

I reached down with my good hand.

My trembling fingers slid into his damp, dark hair.

I pulled his head against my chest, holding him with everything I had left.

"You're bleeding," I cried softly.

"It's nothing," he murmured against my sweater.

"The perimeter is cleared."

Dante appeared in the doorway of the vault, his face grim as granite.

"Boss."

Alessandro did not lift his head from my lap immediately.

He waited three seconds, drawing strength from my touch, before slowly rising to his feet.

"What is it, Dante?"

"We searched the lead vehicle," Dante said, holding up a bloodstained tactical radio.

"The strike team wasn't sent by Dominic Vance."

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.

"Who sent them?"

Dante stepped forward and laid a charred driver's license onto the metal table.

"The team leader was registered to the private security division of the Caruso Shipping Consortium."

My breath hitched in my throat.

Alessandro’s own family.

"Silvio," Alessandro hissed through clenched teeth.

His uncle.

The senior elder of the Caruso syndicate.

"Silvio didn't want the ledger, boss," Dante added, his voice dropping into a grave whisper.

"We found the written orders in the glove box."

"Silvio ordered them to execute Sophia and burn her father's letter."

"He knew what was inside that envelope four years ago."

Alessandro turned toward me.

He reached out and took the old, yellowed envelope from my hands.

His jaw was set like a vice.

May you like

"Open it, Sophia," Alessandro said.

"It's time you learned why your father chose me."
