Chapter 14 - Restoring the Canvas—Healing the Wounds of the Past

Two weeks later, the morning sun poured through the massive skylights of my newly renovated Chelsea studio.

Gabriel had purchased the entire historic building for me, outfitting it with state-of-the-art climate control, museum-grade security systems, and every restoration chemical and tool an artist could ever dream of.

In the center of the room sat The Madonna of the Shadows.

The authentic canvas had been safely retrieved from the church vault. With federal authorities supervising, I had used specialized, non-invasive solvent solutions to reveal the hidden engravings on the wooden backing, allowing the Justice Department to seize and redistribute the stolen offshore funds to the families of Vane’s victims.

Now, the painting belonged to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and I was given the sole contract to complete its full chemical restoration.

I stood before the easel, wearing my paint-splattered apron, carefully dabbing a microscopic layer of natural resin varnish over the Madonna’s shadowed veil.

Warm hands slid gently around my waist from behind.

I smiled, leaning my head back against Gabriel’s solid chest. He wore a simple white shirt and dark trousers, looking relaxed and utterly happy.

“You’ve been staring at that brushstroke for twenty minutes,” he whispered, kissing the curve of my neck.

“It’s Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro technique,” I replied, turning in his arms and wrapping my hands around his neck. “Light and dark in perfect balance. You have to respect the contrast.”

Gabriel smiled, his dark eyes brimming with deep, unconditional love. “I know a thing or two about light and dark. For thirty years, my life was only shadows. Until you brought the color back into it.”

My heart swelled. “My father would have loved you, Gabriel.”

“Your father was a brave man,” Gabriel said softly. “And he raised a queen.”

Gabriel took a step back, reaching into his pocket.

He didn't make a scene in front of a crowded ballroom. He didn't invite photographers or wealthy investors to boost his public image.

He dropped down on one knee right there on the paint-splattered wooden floor of my studio, looking up at me with raw, vulnerable honesty.

In his hand was an antique platinum ring holding a flawless, radiant-cut blue diamond—the exact shade of the midnight sky over Blackwood Manor.

“Shantel Vance,” Gabriel said, his voice trembling slightly with genuine emotion. “I don't want to control your life. I want to spend mine protecting your dreams, standing by your side, and loving you until my last breath. Will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife?”

Tears of pure joy spilled down my cheeks.

“Yes,” I cried, laughing through the tears. “Yes, Gabriel! A thousand times yes!”

He slid the ring onto my finger, rising to his feet and lifting me effortlessly into the air as he spun me around, our laughter echoing through the sunlit studio before his lips captured mine in a deep, passionate kiss.
