Chapter 15 - THE QUEEN BESIDE THE KING

Six months later.

The grand ballroom of the Hayes Tower on the forty-second floor was ablaze with crystal light.

Five hundred of the most influential figures in the Midwest were gathered for the annual Hayes Charity Gala.

Mayors, senators, federal judges, and corporate titans mingled with the most powerful syndicate families in the country.

Yet tonight, there was no tension in the air.

The Chicago underworld had never been more peaceful.

Under Declan Hayes’s unchallenged rule, street violence had plummeted, and dirty narcotics had been driven entirely out of the city ports.

On the raised stage at the end of the ballroom, a string quartet concluded a flawless classical piece.

Clara Jenkins stood as the guest solo violinist.

Her music was breathtaking, filled with emotion and triumph.

The crowd erupted into thunderous applause.

Clara beamed, bowing gracefully before looking up toward the private VIP balcony overlooking the hall.

On the balcony stood Declan and Norah Hayes.

Norah wore an emerald-green silk velvet evening gown that hugged her curves and pooled at her feet.

Around her neck was a diamond necklace that had once belonged to Declan’s grandmother.

Her hair was swept into an elegant updo, framing a face radiant with confidence and beauty.

She was no longer the quiet secretary hiding behind a desk.

She was the undisputed queen of the Hayes empire.

Declan stood beside her, a glass of vintage champagne in his hand.

He wore a custom black tuxedo that accentuated his broad shoulders and commanding presence.

His arm rested possessively around her waist.

He looked down at her with open, unapologetic adoration.

Don Falcone approached the balcony, bowing his head respectfully to both of them.

“Mrs. Hayes,” Falcone said with genuine warmth.

“Your sister’s performance was magnificent.”

“Thank you, Don Falcone,” Norah replied with a gracious smile.

“Her recovery is a miracle.”

“No miracle, my dear,” Falcone said, glancing at Declan with deep respect.

“Just the power of a man who would move mountains for his wife.”

Falcone toasted his glass and stepped back into the crowd.

Declan leaned down, pressing his lips against Norah’s ear.

“Tired?” he whispered.

“A little,” Norah admitted, leaning back against his chest.

“The baby is kicking today.”

Declan’s entire demeanor shifted.

The ruthless mafia boss who had brought the Five Families to their knees melted into sheer tenderness.

He set his champagne glass on the balustrade.

He slid his large, warm hand over the slight swell of her stomach beneath the emerald velvet.

He felt the tiny, distinct flutter beneath his palm.

Declan closed his eyes, an overwhelming wave of gratitude washing over him.

A son.

An heir who would grow up in peace, not war.

“He has your stubbornness,” Declan murmured, kissing her temple.

“He has your heartbeat,” Norah replied softly.

She turned in his arms, resting her hands against the lapels of his tuxedo.

She looked down at the glittering Chicago skyline stretching out beneath them.

The late-May rain was gone.

The sky was clear, studded with a million brilliant stars reflected on the dark surface of Lake Michigan.

Six months ago, she had pressed herself against the office door, covered in bruises, terrified that speaking the truth would destroy her world.

She had asked him not to interfere.

And he had answered by burning every enemy who had ever threatened her peace.

“Do you remember what you asked me that morning?” Norah whispered.

Declan looked into her eyes.

“I asked who gave you those bruises.”

Norah smiled, tracing the sharp contour of his jawline.

“And I wouldn't answer because I was afraid you would die for me.”

Declan leaned down, resting his forehead against hers.

His breath was warm against her lips.

“I would die for you ten thousand times, Norah,” he promised.

“But starting tonight, and for the rest of our days...”

He pressed his lips to hers in a slow, passionate, eternal kiss.

“We live.”

Outside the glass, the city lights twinkled like diamonds in the endless night.

Beside the king stood his queen.

Safe.

Beloved.

May you like

Unconquered.
